While the specifics have yet to be ironed out, with no funds to be disbursed until at least COP28 next year, I feel cautiously hopeful.  I’m deeply glad for having had the chance to participate in the process, in however marginal a way, and I feel like I learned a tremendous amount simply by being present and listening.   

In keeping with its mission to cultivate communities of transformation and hope for the healing of the world, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary has formed a study committee to provide a historical account of the seminary’s relationship to the Native peoples of the Midwest region where the campus is located and to recommend a set of actions to pursue for the sake of justice and repair.

The history of centers and institutes at Garrett-Evangelical begins with the creation of the Center for the Church and the Black Experience. Instituted in 1970 as one of the primary emphases of the seminary, the Center for the Church and the Black Experience has been a beacon of hope and inspiration for Black students, pastors, churches, and communities for nearly five decades. It has been instrumental in fusing Black people and Black religious life into the entire seminary community.

With the launch of the Center for Ecological Regeneration, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary is both deepening and extending the moral and theological commitments already embedded in our existing centers and institutes. In doing so, it’s important to name that ecological concerns, and the recognition of their inseparability from struggles for racial, gender, and socio-economic justice, have long been associated with Garrett.
