Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary will offer a new Certificate in Ecological Regeneration starting in the 2022-2023 academic year. Approved by the faculty in May, this 15-credit hour certificate will allow students to take graduate courses in ecological theology, environmental ethics, and practical eco-theology to equip them for environmental ministries in diverse contexts for the sake of ecological healing and justice.

The new Certificate in Ecological Regeneration complements the variety of ecological-focused programming options at Garrett-Evangelical, including the ecological regeneration concentration within the Master of Arts in Public Ministry and Master of Divinity degree programs, and the recently launched Center for Ecological Regeneration.

“The courses we offer in ecological theology, ethics, and practice have already been transforming the shape of ministry in our time through the creative work of our graduates,” said Reverend Dr. Timothy Eberhart, Robert and Marilyn Degler McClean associate professor of ecological theology and practice and director of the Center for Ecological Regeneration. “With this new certificate, we’re now able to expand their impact to a broader range of students through either in-person or online formats. I’m confident that those compelled by faith to the just healing of the earth will find in these courses both spiritual wisdom and practical instruction in the ways that lead to life.”

Garrett-Evangelical’s certificate programs are unique among other higher education certificate programs in that they allow students to earn up to 15 credit hours, which can then be used toward a graduate degree program. In addition, the courses in the certificate program are priced at a significantly reduced rate compared to regular graduate-level courses. Courses are offered in a variety of modalities including in-person, online, hybrid, and hyflex.

“Religious leaders are essential to the ongoing work of ecological justice, which is why Garrett is committed to creating a multiplicity of entry points for students who are leading communities in life-sustaining and socially just futures,” said Reverend Scott Ostlund, vice president for enrollment management. “This certificate will offer learners a flexible and affordable route to gain skillsets that may not have been available to them through previous or traditional degree programs or formation experiences.”

Garrett-Evangelical offers certificates in child advocacy, Christian education, ecological regeneration, and evangelism and church planting. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The final deadline to apply for Fall 2022 enrollment is August 1, 2022. Learn more at Garrett.edu/Certificates.
