Taurean J. Webb, director of the Center for the Church and the Black Experience and instructor of religion and race at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, will be participating in a community conversation following WTTW’s screening of the new documentary, “The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song.” The online screening and conversation will take place on February 9, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. (CST).

January 12, 2021 — Dr. Wonhee Anne Joh, professor of theology and culture at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, is a member of a team of scholars who recently received a Project Grant for Researchers from the Louisville Institute. Joh, along with Dr. Nami Kim of Spelman College, Rev. Dr. Boyoung Lee of Iliff School of Theology, and Dr. Keun-Joo Christine Pae of Denison University, will be working together on a project titled, “Antiracist Work in Asian American Christian Churches.”

January 10, 2021 — Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary will host its annual Town Hall for alums, friends, and partners of the seminary on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, from 12 p.m. -1 p.m. (CST) via Zoom. This year’s Town Hall will feature Rev. Dr. Javier A. Viera, who officially began as president of the seminary on January 1, 2021.

Rev. Dr. Frederick Schmidt
December 21, 2020 — Rev. Dr. Frederick Schmidt, Rueben P. Job associate professor of spiritual formation, will retire on December 31, 2020, after over seven years as a faculty member at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. In addition to regular teaching duties, Schmidt is director of the Rueben P. Job Institute for Spiritual Formation (Job Institute) at Garrett-Evangelical, director of the master of arts in spiritual formation and direction, and supervisor of the doctor of ministry in spiritual direction track. Upon his retirement, Schmidt will be named a Senior Scholar of Garrett-Evangelical.
December 15, 2020 — The Jerre L. and Mary Joy Stead Center for Ethics and Values (Stead Center) at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary has launched a new website,, a first step in developing a new model for implementing the center’s mission. The website serves as a hub for promoting discourse, events, online education, and more in the areas of religion, theology, and ethics.
