Garrett-Evanston CDF Freedom Schools Program

The Garrett-Evanston Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools Program is designed specifically for elementary students who are currently enrolled in the 3rd – 8th grades in Evanston’s District 65. Our Summer Enrichment Camp is a six-week summer program focused on literacy and creative arts. This free program will include small classes; breakfast, lunch, and a snack; field trips; and a lot of fun! The program fosters a love of reading, increased self-esteem, and positive attitudes towards learning.

Classes are held in the 5th Ward of Evanston, and students receive two meals and a snack each day. This year, six college/seminary students have received training to serve as servant leader interns for the program, which is grounded in a model curriculum that includes five essential components:

  1. High quality academic enrichment
  2. Parent and family involvement
  3. Civic engagement and social action
  4. Intergenerational leadership development
  5. Nutrition, health and mental health
