Doctor of Philosophy

Admissions Requirements ⁄ Admissions Procedures ⁄ Admissions Application

This program prepares persons for teaching and research in theological seminaries, departments of religion in colleges and universities, and church leadership. While the program is centered at Garrett-Evangelical, it draws on resources of Northwestern University, the Association of Chicago Theological Schools, and other approved schools.

Students may specialize in one of five program areas:

A. Core Requirements - 40 semester hours

For specific requirements, see each concentration.

Core Curriculum - 7 semester hours






Biblical and Theological Hermeneutics (taken first semester)






Teaching Seminar (taken first year of course work)






Research Seminar (taken last year of course work)


Major Field - 18-24 semester hours (depending on program)



Minor Field - 9 semester hours



Electives - 6 hours (depending on program)



B. Research Tools - minimum of 2 languages or 1 language and 1 research tool

C. Qualifying Examinations

D. Dissertation and Exam

E. Residency Requirement - at least three semesters on campus
