The Call of the Deacon and the Future of United Methodist Ministry

What is the future of United Methodist Ministry?

This question may be more relevant now than it ever has been before.

At Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, we believe that the call of the Deacon is the future of ministry in The United Methodist Church. Since the founding of the Order of the Deacon, Garrett has been a leader in preparing deacons for ministry, and for following these leaders into the public square as agents of change for the Church, for our neighborhoods, and for the world. The call of the deacon is not peripheral at Garrett, it is core to the mission of the Seminary as evidenced by the rich cohort of incoming deacons that we admit every year.

Rev. Dr. Virginia Lee

In light of this deep commitment to the Order of the Deacon, Garrett is hosting a virtual conversation with Rev. Dr. Virginia Lee titled, “The Call of the Deacon and the Future of United Methodist Ministry.” This event will be a great chance to learn both about Garrett, and about the work that deacons are doing to lead the Church into new and innovative directions. Dr. Lee is the associate professor of Christian education, the director of our Master of Arts in Faith, Culture, and Educational Leadership program, and the director of Deacon Studies at Garrett.
