SUMMARY:Everyone Can Preach Good News! Communicating the Transformative Message of the Gospel
DESCRIPTION:December 8th-9th | 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (CST) each day\nThis workshop is designed persons of any age or stage of their Christian life who desire to understand the need for authentic proclamation of the Christian Gospel. It makes accessible to all persons\, including preachers\, who recognize the proclamatory nature of the Christian life\, and at the same time\, makes real the assertion that preaching is the proclamation of the good news of the Gospel. \nUsing the text Good News Preaching: Offering the Gospel in Every Sermon\, the workshop offers critical information on preparing a good news message that is based on the Gospel and engages attendees in practical ways to develop and present that message in formal and informal settings. \nWorkshop Leaders: Rev. A minister who wants local news to publicize your church’s programs? Join Rev. Benjamin Perry\, Garrett’s Editorial Director\, and learn practical skills to accomplish your goals. Rev. Perry has previously been a communications director for Union Theological Seminary\, helped coordinate media relations for the Poor People’s Campaign\, and was previously the Minister of Media Strategy at Middle Church. An award-winning writer\, he is the author of Cry\, Baby: Why Our Tears Matter\, his work has been featured in publications like The Atlantic\, The Washington Post\, Slate\, Teen Vogue\, and Religion News Service\, and he has appeared on outlets like NPR\, MSNBC\, The BBC and more. They will lead a short presentation on best practices for engaging media\, and then will be happy to answer any questions you bring about particular projects you’re working on. SUMMARY:Let's Talk Globally: Religious-racial cultural imagination(s) in Britain
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person or online for a conversation with Medomfo Owusu\, a 1st year MDiv student as she explores the racial-religious cultural imagination of the British public towards soulful soundscapes. Soulful soundscapes\, a Black Catholic term for sonic expressions of Africana Christianities in religious and nonreligious settings\, has been present in Britain for centuries by various communities from the African diaspora\, and yet is othered or erased from the cultural imagination of predominantly Eurocentric views of the British public. Using the soulful soundscapes of the 2018 Royal Wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as our starting point\, this conversation aims to foster critical discussions of racial-religious cultural imaginations concerning soundscapes\, worship and historical narratives.

DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Church and Black Experience will hold a Lunch and Learn on Thursday\, September 18th in Room 205 and on Teams where Rev. William H. Lamar IV\, pastor of Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington\, DC\, will be our lecturer. Lamar has been long been actively involved in community organizing and currently serves the founding board chair of the Just Power Alliance\, a collective of organizations from the Midwest to the east coast that focuses on building multi-racial\, multi-class\, multi-generational\, and multi-faith world that is joyful and just for all. His Washington Post op-ed from December 15\, 2020\, published after the Proud Boys desecrated Metropolitan by vandalizing church property\, was a clarion call that culminated in a $1 million judgment for punitive damages against the white supremacist group for their criminality. Dr. Emma Escobar and PhD candidates Evelmyn Ivens and Paola Márquez Leones as they facilitate a session on Bodies\, Tables & Belonging: Reimagining Theology from a Latine Perspective. Ph.D. candidate Paola Márquez Leones’s research\, Visualizing Mestizaje: Black Women’s Bodies\, Religion\, and the Nation\, examines how race\, gender\, and faith intersect in shaping belonging. Evelmyn Ivens’s project\, Sobremesa: A Practice of Resistance\, Belonging\, and Theological Imagination\, explores how shared meals and hospitality practices open new possibilities for community and justice. Together\, they will invite us to imagine spaces of belonging where voices long silenced are heard\, honored\, and celebrated.

DESCRIPTION:“To care for the Asian self is to care for the nonhumans.” Curious about what this might mean? Join us in person or online for a meal and conversation with Dr. Dong Hyeon Jeong\, whose book Embracing the Nonhuman in the Gospel of Mark has sparked interest among both biblical scholars and those who care deeply about “creation and creatures great and small.” Together we’ll consider the following: What ecological and nonhuman roots ground our diasporic belonging? How does the ecological lens accentuate Asian identities? This salon-style gathering invites fresh ways of narrating identity and belonging as intimately connected to the nonhuman elements of creation. We will reflect on how animals\, plants\, and ecosystems shape our sense of self and community\, and what this means for cultivating belonging in a complex\, diasporic world. SUMMARY:She Refuses To Be Comforted: Black Theology and A Mary Who Cries
DESCRIPTION:The Stead Center and the Center for the Church and Black Experience welcome Rev. Dr. Amey Victoria Adkins-Jones for a Lunch and Learn\, where she will discuss her book\, Immaculate Misconceptions: A Black Mariology. \nAmey Victoria Adkins-Jones is Assistant Professor of Theology and Africana studies at Candler School of Theology (Emory University). A graduate of the University of Virginia and Duke Divinity School\, she received her Ph.D. in Religion from Duke University in 2016 with a Certificate in Feminist Theory. She was the first Black woman to graduate from the doctoral program in Christian theology and ethics. \nHer first book\, Immaculate Misconceptions: A Black Mariology centers the Black Madonna to examine how Christian theologies of purity influence who and what we deem to be sacred. She is at work on a second book project\, See No Evil\, which explores how visual technologies and AI impact public perception of violence and Black death. \nOutside of academia\, Rev. Dr. Adkins-Jones is an ordained Baptist minister who frequently preaches and teaches around the country\, and brings pastoral sensibility to her work centering social justice. She shares life with her beloved spouse and their four children in Atlanta\, GA.
