SUMMARY:Cátadra Paulo Freire Conference 2022
DESCRIPTION:Freire’s Pedagogy of Commitment in a World Threatened by Intermittent Pandemics\nIn the surreal global scenario of a pandemic still evolving\, the rise of economic inequalities\, social exclusion\, racism\, sexism evidence the presence of other pandemics woven throughout the history of neoliberalism and forcefully reveal the atrocities that continue to spread its virus and produce its victims. \nAs a result\, we witness the intensification of alienation and indifference concerning the essential issues that guarantee life on the planet. Therefore\, it is urgent to revive our ethical commitment to human life and dignity. How to challenge a selfish neoliberal ideology and its financial gluttony that puts economic health above people’s health? Is it possible to think of education as a practice of freedom under the siege of surveillance and exploitation of personal and collective data? How to think of educational spaces (face-to-face\, virtual\, hybrid) created in the shadow of the pandemic as creative spaces that critically educate their citizens? How can we preserve the importance of the conscientization process to think about education in this challenging context and critically reflect on what we do\, how we do it\, why we do it and for whom we do it? \nWhat kind of alliances and solidarity do spaces committed to change demand? Are these spaces capable of understanding and clarifying the meanings of critical and radical actions that must be present in emancipatory education? \nThe Cátedra Paulo Freire Conference 2022 is an invitation to those who yearn for a more humane and ethical world to face the current forces that try to numb and immobilize us and\, in a spirit of resistance\, to commit to life\, to the ethics and beauty that Freire aspired so much.

SUMMARY:PhD Studies Program Workshop: "Liberate Your Research"
DESCRIPTION:The Liberate Your Research workshop seeks to train radical scholars and activists in liberating our theories and methods from the constraints of the academic and non-profit industrial complexes. SUMMARY:Multi-vocational Ministry and the Future of the Church
DESCRIPTION:As ministry changes on a foundational level\, more and more students are pursuing their call to ministry bi- or multi-vocationally. For some\, this is a response to the financial and material complexity of being a minister at this moment in time. For others\, multi-vocational ministry is the natural result of feeling called in more ways than one\, to ministry that puts an individual in multiple ministerial spaces both inside and outside of the Church. \nIf this sounds like you\, or if you are a local ministry leader seeking wisdom around how to prepare students for ministry and theological education in this current moment\, join us on July 7th for this important conversation. We will be joined by Rev. Dr. Reginald Blount as well as a few other guests who are serving in multi-vocational ministry contexts. \nSpeakers \n\nDr. Reginald Blount is a bi-vocational minister himself serving at the Murray H. Leiffer Associate Professor of Formation\, Leadership\, and Culture and Director of the Center for the Church and the Black Experience at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary while also serving as the pastor at Arnett Chapel AME in Chicago. \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \nRev. Luke Pepper is an ordained United Methodist deacon and currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Northern Illinois Conference Order of Deacon. He graduated Garrett-Evangelical with his Master of Divinity in 2011 and also holds a Masters of Arts in Teaching Special Education. His primary appointment is as a middle school special education teacher in Carol Stream\, IL where he also now serves as Co-President of his local teacher’s union. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cuidados Necessários Para Habitar A Terra: Reflexões do Sul Global
DESCRIPTION:Cuidados Necessários Para Habitar A Terra: \nReflexões do Sul Global\n6 de Outubro de 2022 | 13h – 15h – Horário Brasília (11 a.m. -1 p.m.

SUMMARY:Necessary Care to Inhabit the Earth: Theological Reflections from the Global South with Leonardo Boff
DESCRIPTION:Necessary Care to Inhabit the Earth: \nTheological Reflections from the Global South\nIt is with great joy that we invite you to participate in the celebrations for the 35th anniversary of the Hispanic-Latinx Center. October 6th will be a historic milestone for the Garrett community\, as we will be honored to virtually welcome one of the great theologians of our time\, Leonardo Boff. \nRecognized worldwide as one of the leading liberation theologians\, Boff has expanded his work since the 1980s\, delving into ecological issues as extensions of liberation theology. As a tireless activist for the poor and excluded\, he argues that we need to hear not only the cry of the oppressed\, but also the cry of the Earth–both are in need of deliverance. \nThe planetary crisis that weighs on the overexploited Mother Earth and the weakening of democratic structures in many nations\, demand from us a reflection about viable paths that make possible a new way of living in kinship. This must be based on the values of justice and equity\, love and kindness\, wisdom and respect for all beings that inhabit our planet. It is precisely on these themes that Boff will reflect\, inviting us to think about the care needed to inhabit this common house. \nThe lecture will take place online and is free to attend. For community members in the Evanston/Chicago area\, you are invited to join us for a watch party on campus (location TBA) and then for a time of lunch conversation following the lecture. Lunch will be provided. \nYou can learn more about Leonardo Boff at his website: https://leonardoboff.org/. \nQuestions? Contact the Hispanic-Latinx Center at hispanic-latinx.center@garrett.edu.

SUMMARY:Humanimal Virtual Conference
DESCRIPTION:This conference aims to have a conversation about the depictions of humans and other “animals” within biblical texts\, Second Temple literature\, and the Bible’s reception. Nonhuman animals are implicated in many subfields within biblical studies\, particularly as categories of “human” and animal are recognized as constructed\, and the power dynamic between them is problematized. This conference draws on the work of influential ethologists\, philosophers\, cultural theorists\, and literary critics to analyze depictions of diverse living beings in the Bible and related texts.
