SUMMARY:ART\, EARTH & ETHICS
DESCRIPTION:We’re living at a time when it’s hard to feel our connections to each other and the planet. Hotter temperatures\, fiercer storms\, disrupted communities. How can we work together to recognize and build upon our radical interconnectedness\, ethically\, ecologically\, faithfully? \nJoin the Garrett community and collaborators for an artist talk and workshop with Dr. Cara Judea Alhadeff\, a Mother\, Artist\, Author\, Professor\, Action-Philosopher\, Environmental-Justice Organizer. \nSEPTEMBER 5\, 4-6pm: Welcome the Stranger: Interreligious Lessons from Zazu Dreams: Artist Talk \nSEPTEMBER 6\, 4-6pm: Collective Spiritual Intelligence: An Intimate Guide to Living Our Eco-Ethics: Workshop \nMore about the artist talk: Welcome the Stranger: Interreligious Lessons from Zazu Dreams: Artist Talk \nBy illuminating the intersections of history\, geography\, ethics\, and symbiosis between biodiversity\, religious\, and ethnic diversity\, the book (and accompanying art for) Zazu Dreams explores how we can transform our petroleum-addicted convenience culture to individual and collective ancient technologies and biophilia (or the love of life). \nMore about the workshop: Collective Spiritual Intelligence: An Intimate Guide to Living Our Eco-Ethics \nThis workshop will offer participants opportunities to recognize the value of re-“discovering” our innate capacities to think beyond the habitual\, thus expanding the possibilities of living our spiritual intelligence\, our radical interconnectedness. We will ask how specific biblical ethics of co-implication (empathy and somatic attunement) can develop a profound sense of individual agency and how that empowerment can lead to creative response-ability through collective/collaborative eco-social\, spiritual justice. \nBoth events will happen at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Room 205 at 2121 Sheridan Rd.\, Evanston\, IL . Co-sponsored by the Center for Ecological Regeneration\, the Stead Center\, Garrett Art Committee\, GreenFaith\, Faith in Place\, and the Garrett Collective \nMore about the artist: Dr. Cara Judea Alhadeff’s photographs and performance videos have been exhibited across the globe from Seoul to Lyon to Hamburg and are in collections including SFMoMA\, MoMA Salzburg\, Austria\, and the Kinsey Institute. Alongside Vandana Shiva and Archbishop Desmond Tutu\, Alhadeff received the Random Kindness Community Resilience Leadership Award. Her work has been the subject of documentaries for international public television/ radio. A former professor at UC Santa Cruz\, Alhadeff and her family live and perform creative zero-waste in their eco-art installation repurposed school bus. More at www.carajudeaalhadeff.com

SUMMARY:Sex Matters: Black Churches & the Fight for Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Black churches in the United States – as well as the churches of people of African descent globally – are facing new sociopolitical challenges as the geopolitical earth quakes. Specifically\, the democratic commitments of these churches are being challenged in critical ways; these churches are being forced to (re)consider\, discern\, and assert the value of democracy in secular and sacred contexts. While Black churches – like other ecclesial communities – have perennially struggled with faithful navigation of questions of gender\, sex\, and sexuality (i.e.\, “sex”) diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (often opting for avoidance and silence)\, the contemporary assaults on democracy and its most commendable foundations (i.e.\, self-determination\, human dignity\, and equality\, freedom from discrimination and persecution) are forcing a different approach. The choice is simple: Black churches can fight for democracy and dismantle its internal injustices with respect to sex or Black churches can continue to avoid matters of sex in silence and cede the fight for democracy within and outside of its sanctuaries. Building on the thesis of her book\, Black\, Quare & Then to Where: Theories of Justice and Black Sexual Ethics\, through “Sex Matters: Black Churches & the Fight for Democracy\,” Rev. jennifer susanne leath\, Ph.D. will explain how this dilemma evolved\, why it is essential that Black churches choose to fight for democracy and dismantle its internal injustices in the present sociopolitical context\, and how Black churches might begin (and continue) to do this. \nAbout the guest lecturer \n  \nRev. jennifer susanne leath\, Ph.D. is the Queen’s National Scholar and Associate Professor in Black Religions at Queen’s University (Kingston\, Ontario\, Canada); she is also the pastor of Tanner-Price AME Church (Windsor\, Ontario\, Canada). Prior to Queen’s\, Dr. Leath served on the faculty of Iliff School of Theology (Denver\, CO) as the Assistant Professor of Religion and Social Justice and Director of the Master of Arts in Social Justice and Ethics degree program after completing her A.B. at Harvard University\, her M.Div. at Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York\, and her Ph.D. at Yale University. Dr. leath also helped establish the Center on African American Religion\, Sexual Politics\, and Social Justice (CARSS) at Columbia University\, serving as its first Director of Research. Dr. leath was a fellow in the Women’s Studies in Religion Program at Harvard Divinity School (2014-2015). Rev. leath is an Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and\, prior to Tanner-Price\, she pastored Campbell AME Church (Media\, PA)\, Allen AME Church (White Plains\, NY)\, Campbell Chapel AME Church (Denver\, CO). Pastor leath expresses her love for all people through her passion for justice and dismantling all forms of oppression. She especially demonstrates her unequivocal commitments to equity\, diversity\, inclusion\, and indigeneity through her sexual justice work within the AME Church and Black religious traditions more broadly as well as through her research and writing. Beyond her numerous articles\, Dr. leath’s first monograph\, Black\, Quare\, and Then to Where: Theories of Justice and Black Sexual Ethics\, was published in Fall 2023 (Duke University Press). Through this book\, leath introduces and develops “quare” possibilities for flourishing Black futures. Also passionate about the ways diverse Christian traditions can pursue and promote justice together through ecumenical engagement\, Dr. leath serves as a Co-Moderator of the Joint Consultative Group between the World Council of Churches (WCC) and Pentecostal Churches and a member of the Central Committee of the WCC.

SUMMARY:Faithful Preaching for our Times
DESCRIPTION:Styberg Preaching Institute 20th Anniversary Event\nOctober 7 – 9\, 2025 at Garrett Seminary\n  \nIn a world increasingly shaped by authoritarianism\, nationalism\, and historical revisionism\, the call to preach with steadfastness\, mutual accountability\, courage\, and clarity has never been more urgent. Faithful Preaching for Our Times is a homiletics conference that gathers pastors\, theologians\, scholars\, and activists to explore just and liberative approaches to proclaiming the gospel. Together\, we will examine how preaching can confront the forces that distort truth\, suppress justice\, and silence the vulnerable—while embodying a faith that resists\, liberates\, and restores in sustained ways. Through workshops\, plenaries\, and worship\, this gathering invites preachers to engage their prophetic vocation with theological depth and bold imagination for the challenges of our time. \n  \nVisit garrett.edu/styberg2025 to learn more.
