The Practice of Christian Mindfulness
April 29 – June 6, 2019
Instructor: Dr. Amy Oden
Course Fee: $200.00 (includes 2 CEUs)
This course will examine the biblical and historical roots of mindfulness in Jesus’ teaching and Christian tradition. We will also experiment with a variety of mindfulness practices. Christians have always practiced mindfulness. Yet, from the popular landscape of the mindfulness movement, you might not know it. Some Christians question whether mindfulness belongs to our faith traditions. Together we’ll read Right Here, Right Now: The Practice of Christian Mindfulness. Explore theological distinctives as well as the range of Christian mindfulness practices and postures. Discover its potential to deepen the life of faith and empower participation in God’s mission of love in the world.
Dr. Amy Oden
Born and raised on the prairies of Oklahoma, Amy claims her spiritual home under the wide-open prairie sky. Over the last 30 year, she’s been a college professor, a seminary professor and a seminary dean. Right now, she is Professor of Early Church History and Spirituality at Saint Paul School of Theology. She looks forward to every day with students, companioning them in the discovery of God’s life in church history and ministry. Amy believes that ancient Christian voices have wisdom for spiritual practice today. She has published books about women in church history, about both ancient and contemporary hospitality and her most recent book is on the practice of Christian mindfulness. She offers spiritual direction at her home and through companioning seminary students.
