Remembering Erin Carey, Son of Mechelle Moore

June 19, 2018

Dear Garrett-Evangelical Community,

Many of you will know by now of the sudden death of Mechelle Moore’s 17 year old son, Erin Carey. He was the victim of a shooting incident yesterday and died at 1:14 a.m. this morning. Erin had just graduated from high school, an accomplishment Mechelle had actively supported and of which she was very proud.

I want to express my appreciation to the quick responses of the Business Office and the Office of Student services for providing information, opportunities to sign cards to Mechelle, and times and space in which to pray.

I spoke with Mechelle this morning. She is strong and understandably involved in making necessary arrangements for Erin. I assured Mechelle that the seminary stands ready to be of any service and support for her that we can provide. The Seminary has also set up a GoFundMe page to offset the funeral expenses. If you would like to contribute to the Erin Carey Memorial Fund please click here.

The funderal will be held at the Progressive Baptist Church at 3685 S. Wentworth Avenue, Chicago Illinois 60609.

Public viewing — Saturday, June 23, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon

Repast — Immediately following Funeral Service
Burial —   Monday, June 25, 2018, at 10:00 a.m., Oakridge Cemetery, 4301 Roosevelt Road, Hillside, Illinois 60162

I am reminded of St. Paul’s encouragement to weep with those who weep. And so we have already begun to do so. In the meantime, we will keep Mechelle and her family in our prayers as we entrust Erin to the everlasting and eternal love of God.
