In Memoriam: Dr. John Hinkle, Former Faculty

September 7, 2014

Dr. John Hinkle, beloved former faculty member, passed away on August 28, 2014. Hinkle was a loving husband and father as well as a minister, missionary, clinical psychologist, and professor. He served as a missionary for The United Methodist Church (UMC) to the Philippines from 1960-1964 and established a church in Iligan City, Philippines. Hinkle was a member of the faculty at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary from 1972-1999. He served on the National Committee for Psychological Assessment for the UMC from 1980-2000. Hinkle also maintained a private practice of psychology focusing on the assessment of ministerial candidates for over 40 years.

“Dr. Hinkle provided entrepreneurial leadership not only for the school in psychological assessment, related research, and in doctoral level training of pastoral counselor/ clinicians, but he also made many contributions to the UMC and to other denominations as they began to seek ways to systematically assess the psychological health of candidates for ordination,” said President Rector. “Given his training and his experience as missionary in the Philippines, Hinkle was also an early leader/expert in assisting students and faculty to learn more about the cultural dimensions of their work and ministry and its interaction with theological reflection.”

Hinkle earned a Bachelor of Arts from Taylor University in 1955, Bachelor of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological School in 1959, Master of Arts from Northwestern University in 1960, and his Doctorate from Northwestern University in 1970.
