Garrett-Evangelical Launches Affordable, Accessible, and Relevant Credit-Bearing Certificates

June 3, 2019
New Certificates at Garrett-Evangelical

Students earn a certificate of completion in one of five areas of study and up to 15 credit hours to apply toward a degree program for $425 per credit hour.

Today, prospective students can begin applying to Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary’s new credit-bearing certificate programs in child advocacy, Christian education, evangelism and church planting, music ministry, and spiritual formation and direction. Designed to be affordable, accessible, and relevant, these are ecumenical certificates, most with a track of courses for those seeking The United Methodist Church’s professional certification. Certificates are perfect for those interested in professional development or lifelong learning, and those wanting to “try” theological education without the larger time and financial commitments of a degree program. Courses are offered at a rate of $425 per credit hour making it the lowest credit-hour fee for a credit-bearing certificate among United Methodist seminaries.

“In the midst of the uncertainty in The United Methodist Church, the continued decline in many mainline denominations, and broader societal changes, there is an even greater need for theologically educated clergy and laity,” said President Lallene J. Rector. “We are claiming the urgency of our context and taking concrete action by making our education accessible to more people. It will reflect the scripturally-informed and prophetic voices that Garrett-Evangelical is known for in its educational programs. With these certificates, we hope to better serve those persons in congregations, communities, the academy, and around the world who are discerning and responding to the new thing God is doing among us.”

Certificate students will learn from one the most diverse theological faculties in the nation and be a member of an ecumenical, inter-cultural, inclusive learning community. Each certificate program includes five to six credit-bearing courses that integrate rigorous academics and real-world application. Many courses are available online or on campus though our intensive January and summer terms.

Each certificate is designed to be completed in two years, though students have up to ten years to finish the program, with the goal that their education will complement and not compete with their current job and life responsibilities. Upon completion, students will get a certificate from Garrett-Evangelical they can highlight on their resume and LinkedIn profile and will be able to transfer up to 15 credit hours toward one of our degree programs. Plans to add certificates in other areas of study in the next academic year are already underway.

The new certificate programs are another step in Garrett-Evangelical’s commitment to making theological education more affordable and accessible and builds upon the growing success of the seminary’s Connectional Learning program, which has received more than 2,100 clergy and laity registrations to its low-cost and free online, regional, and on-campus offerings in the two and a half years since its inception.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis for all certificate programs and admitted certificate students can register for Fall 2019 courses beginning June 15, 2019. Those who apply by August 1, 2019, can waive the $75 application fee by using the code LAUNCH.
