Garrett-Evangelical and GBHEM to Sponsor Live Webcast On General Conference Legislation and the Deacon

March 5, 2012

With General Conference just weeks away, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) will sponsor a live webcast focusing on legislation pertaining to the Order of Deacon.  Held on Tuesday, March 13 at 1:30 p.m. (CST), this webcast will feature Dr. Margaret Ann Crain of Garrett-Evangelical and Rev. Anita Wood of GBHEM.

Eliminating secondary appointments, further streamlining the candidacy process, and allowing ordination when educational requirements are completed are among the major changes proposed by the Commission on the Study of Ministry that would have direct impact on deacons.  If the delegates of General Conference approve such proposals, deacons and elders could be eligible for ordination after the completion of their educational requirements and full conference membership after serving a minimum of two years.

Rev. Anita Wood and Dr. Margaret Ann Crain will discuss these proposals and more during this hour-long webcast.  Rev. Wood is a Director of Professional Ministry Development in the Division of Ordained Ministry of GBHEM and a deacon in the West Ohio Conference.  Dr. Crain, Professor of Christian Education at Garrett-Evangelical, served as a member of the Commission on the Study of Ministry and is a deacon in the Northern Illinois Conference. Dr. Virginia Lee, Associate Professor of Christian Education and Director of Deacon Studies at Garrett-Evangelical, will moderate this discussion. Dr. Lee is a deacon in the Virginia Conference.

The webcast will begin at 1:30 p.m. (CST) at  Moderator, Dr. Lee, will be taking viewers questions via e-mail.  Questions for Rev. Wood and Dr. Crain can be submitted to
