Doctor of Ministry

The Doctor of Ministry is an advanced degree inviting pastors to become highly skilled practitioners in specific practices of ministry. It does this by:

  • Immersing the pastors in intensive coursework focused on specific practices of ministry.
  • Offering strong peer-learning and networking by allowing pastors to move through their coursework together in cohorts.
  • While maintaining cohorts, allowing sufficient flexibility in the coursework schedule for pastors to take courses outside of the regular DMin offerings, including taking PhD courses offered at Garrett-Evangelical.
  • Providing clear linkages between the material covered in the courses and the actual practice of ministry in the pastor's local ministry site.

Doctor of Ministry (DMin) Tracks

Garrett-Evangelical current offers four Doctor of Ministry tracks:

Admissions Requirements:

  • Applicants must have earned a Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree or its equivalent.

Most master's degrees that are not MDivs require at least some additional theology courses for students to meet MDiv equivalency. Please feel free to contact the Registrar's Office to have your transcript evaluated for equivalency.

  • Applicants must have completed at least three years of full-time ministry following the awarding of that degree.

Applicants do not, however, have to be ordained nor does the ministry have to be in a parish setting.

  • Applicants must be serving in a ministry setting in which the applicant could direct a ministry intervention as part of the final DMin project.

It is important that applicants have both the access to and support of a ministry setting in which they can complete their final project. This setting could be a parish church, a cluster of local congregations, an annual conference or judicatory, or any other setting appropriate to the practice of ministry being studied by the applicant.

International Student Applicants
The DMin Program offers coursework in intensive sessions twice a year. This schedule has implications for international students and visa applications. Therefore, we are unable to offer F-1 visas for Doctor of Ministy students.

A completed application consists of:

  • Application Form

  • Biographical Essay
  • Sample of Writing
  • 3 letters of reference
  • Ministry site Endorsement Letter
  • Transcripts from all institutions attended
  • $75 application fee
  • Background check (conducted by the seminary, may take up to two weeks to complete)
  • Additional financial and church documents are required of international students in order to satisfy internal and federal requirements.

Integrative Focus

Practical and Intergrative Focus

One aspect that sets the Garrett-Evangelical DMin apart from other programs is the strong emphasis on integrating the student's work in the classroom with the student's actual engagement in ministry. The program offers concrete connections between these two through:

  • Establishing a team of people from the pastor's ministry site who will help encourage and advise the pastor throughout the coursework phase.
  • A candidacy process for the pastor in which seminary faculty are in conversation with the members of the pastor's team.
  • A final project in which the pastor works alongside of the student's ministry setting team to enhance the practice of ministry at the ministry setting.

In this way, Garrett-Evangelical conceives of the DMin as a gift to the church as much as it is a means of causing pastors to excel in their practice of ministry. Both the pastor and the ministry setting come out improved and strengthened from the pastor's participation in the degree.
