2013 Academic Convocation

July 23, 2012

Rev. Dr. Tex Sample, an ordained elder of The United Methodist Church and professor emeritus at The Saint Paul School of Theology, will be the keynote speaker at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary’s convocation on September 11, 2013. The event will be held at 11:15 a.m. in the Chapel of the Unnamed Faithful and all are welcome to attend.

Sample is the Robert B. and Kathleen Rogers Professor Emeritus of Church and Society at The Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri, where he taught for thirty-two years. Sample holds a B.A. from Millsaps College, an M.Div. from the Boston University School of Theology, and a Ph.D. from the Boston University Graduate School.

"It is a great personal privilege to welcome a longtime friend and colleague, Professor Tex Sample as the 2013 Academic Convocation lecturer,” said President Philip Amerson. “Dr. Sample has published a dozen books that thoughtfully engage the emerging realities faced by the church and our society.  He has a wide following as a scholar and is a much sought after lecturer and preacher.  Tex is one of those rare persons who seems to ‘know no strangers.’  He is equally comfortable at his father's taxi stand or on the floor as a delegate to the United Methodist General Conference. Few people bring the breadth of experience or scholarship that Dr. Sample brings in understanding the contemporary church and the ever shifting dynamics of our society."

Sample has been active throughout his career in both the church and in the community. An ordained elder in The United Methodist Church, he has served on four occasions as a delegate to The General Conference of The United Methodist Church and on six occasions to the South Central Jurisdiction of the UMC. As a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Phoenix, Arizona, he was a volunteer minister who was heavily involved in the Valley Interfaith Project. Further, Sample was an active participant in the Arizona Interfaith Movement, which is an interfaith group comprised of 25 different faith traditions.

Currently, Sample is a freelance lecturer and speaker in North America and overseas. He has published 12 books. His book, Blue Collar Ministry, was named a “Judson Classic” by the Judson Press, and his book U.S. Lifestyles and Mainline Churches was the best selling book by Westminster/John Knox Press for over two years. He has authored several articles for academic journals, periodicals, and books.
