EVANSTON, Illinois, August 2016 – Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary will welcome Rev. Dr. Michael C. R. Nabors, senior pastor of Second Baptist Church in Evanston, Illinois, as its keynote speaker at the 2016 Academic Convocation on September 7, 2016. Titled Such a Time as This,” Nabors will deliver his convocation address at 4:00 p.m. in the seminary’s Chapel of the Unnamed Faithful and all are welcome to attend.

General Board of Higher Education & Ministry
August 22, 2016 — The publishing ministry of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) of The United Methodist Church has announced the editorial board members for its academic publishing imprint, New Room Books. Three faculty members of Garrett-Evangelical were named to the board, including: President Lallene J. Rector, Dr. Margaret Ann Crain, and Dr. K.K. Yeo.
Bishop-Elect Tracy Smith Malone and President Rector
July 14, 2016 — Rev. Dr. Tracy Smith Malone, distinguished alumna and trustee of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, was elected as a United Methodist bishop on July 13 at the North Central Jurisdictional (NCJ) Conference in Peoria, Illinois. Smith Malone was the first to be elected bishop at the NCJ Conference held at the Peoria Civic Center July 13-16.
July 14, 2016 — Beloved Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary trustee, Rev. Laurie Haller, was elected as a United Methodist bishop on July 14 at the North Central Jurisdictional Conference in Peoria, Illinois. We send our heartfelt congratulations to Rev. Haller and our prayers as she moves into this new role.
Garrett-Evanston Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools program
June 21, 2016 — The Evanston Community Foundation (ECF) has awarded Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary a $10,000 grant for the newly formed Garrett-Evanston Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools program. The grant announcement was made at the Evanston Community Foundation’s 2016 Grant Awards Celebration and Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 26th. This year’s grantees were chosen from a pool of 64 applicants in the Evanston community. Garrett-Evangelical is excited and honored to be one of 29 organizations who received a grant from the ECF.

May 27, 2016 — The Rev. Dr. Tracy Smith Malone and Bishop Donald A. Ott were named 2016 Distinguished Alums at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary’s 159th Commencement on May 13, 2016. Each year Garrett-Evangelical chooses two alums to be honored as Distinguished Alums. One alum is chosen from the most recent 25 years of graduates, and one alum is chosen from alums who graduated over 25 years ago.
