Meet Hattie Stahl

H_Stahl-23Hometown – Evanston, IL

Age – 25

Home Church & Denomination – First United Methodist Church, Evanston, IL

Degrees – BA in English & Hispanic Studies from Macalester College, in St. Paul, MN

Garrett-Evangelical Degree Program/Year – Master of Divinity, 2013 (hopefully… taking classes part-time, so while I began the degree in Fall 2009, I anticipate at least 4 years).

Career Plans – currently serving as director of youth ministry at the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) of La Grange, IL.  I hope to stay in this position indefinitely.

Personal Information
– I grew up in Evanston, IL. While in high school, I volunteered with the Appalachia Service Project (ASP), helping to repair homes in central Appalachia.  I also traveled with a local leadership group to Costa Rica and Ecuador for weeks of service and adventure! When it came time to apply for college, I felt passionate about finding a school that would fuel my love of Latin American culture and community service. During my college summers, I continued to work with ASP. After graduation, I moved to Virginia but soon found myself heading back to Chicago to serve as the youth director at FUMC La Grange.

Attraction to Garrett-Evangelical – Growing up in Evanston and at First Church, I knew several students, faculty, and staff at Garrett-Evangelical. When I moved back to Chicago after college to serve as the youth director at FUMC La Grange, I really felt compelled to pursue graduate studies at seminary. Once I became aware of that call, Garrett-Evangelical appealed to me because of its Methodist affiliation, its focus on diverse seminary learning, its accommodation for commuter and part-time students, and its emphasis on building church leaders.

Calling – While working as a staffer during my last year with the Appalachia Service Project, several adult volunteers from FUMC La Grange approached me about submitting my resume for their newly vacant youth director position. Although I had thought about ministry as a vocation before, this caused me to consider the concept to a far greater extent. I suddenly found myself ready to listen to what direction God might have planned for me during the next years of my life. Since I started serving in this church two years ago, God has helped me realize over and over again just how much the gifts with which I have been blessed match this church and this particular youth ministry!
