Happiness and Leadership Lecture | October 16, 2013 | 4:00 p.m. | Room 205

Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and the Stead Center for Ethics and Values are sponsoring a series of lectures throughout the upcoming academic year on the theme of "joy." By “joy” we do not have in mind either a superficial cheerfulness or ecstatic bliss. Rather, it is more akin to a sense of peace and satisfaction that comes when one has done something that promotes the good of others; the good of neighbors; the good of the community. Our "Joy of Leadership" speakers are leaders in their respective fields who embody, and in some cases conduct research, this deeper understanding of joy.

On October 16, 2013, we welcome Dr. Matt Bloom, Associate Professor in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame, who will be giving a lecture entitled, "Happiness and Leadership." To learn more about the "Joy of Leadership" lecture series, click here.

"The Joy of Educating for the Common Good"
October 23, 2013

This panel assembled as part of a series on Joy in celebration of the retirement of President Philip Amerson.  This panel of prominent theological academics and practitioners were asked to address the questions, “What does it mean to evoke the idea of the common good such that it might become an object of our teaching? What does it mean to education in such a way that we might vivify already held notions of the common good? How might we in theological education transgress contemporary culture and ecclesial tendencies to treat the idea of the common good as little more than sentimental bosh?”
  • Rev. Dr. Tom Porter, Just Peace Center for Mediation and Conflict Transformation,
  • Dr. Luis Rivera-Rodriguiz, Vice President and Academic Dean, Garrett-Evangelical Seminary
  • Dr. Shanta Premawardhana, President of SCUPE
  • Dr. Sara Wenger Shenk, President of Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary
