About Dr. Schmidt

Theological education depends upon the effort to maintain a lively and creative balance between commitments that are often pitted against one another: the journey inward and the journey outward, the spiritual life and rigorous intellectual engagement, individual and communal formation, spirituality and religious life. In a world that is increasingly spiritual but not religious, and that lurches between the false dichotomies of quietism and activism without careful thought or thorough integration, that balance is more important than ever. I am delighted to be teaching at Garrett-Evangelical where there has been a long-standing devotion to that effort. In addition to my responsibilities as Director of the Rueben P. Job Institute for Spiritual Formation, I enjoy engaging students in their own efforts to do the same in the classroom, on-line, and in print.
