SUMMARY:169th Commencement
DESCRIPTION:Commencement Ceremony\nLocation: Alice Millar Chapel\nAddress: 1870 Sheridan Road\, Evanston\nTime: 9:00-11:00am \nWe’ re honored to announce that Dr. Simran Jeet Singh will be the speaker for the commencement ceremony. Writer\, educator\, and activist Dr. Simran Jeet Singh is a professor of history at Union Theological Seminary and author of The Light We Give: How Sikh Wisdom Can Transform Your Life. In his work and contemplative talks\, he offers a fresh approach to ethical living—one in which love\, caring\, and service go hand-in-hand with personal happiness. Dr. Singh’s vision of hope shows how each of us can turn away from fear\, uncertainty\, and anger to move toward renewal and positive change. \nGrowing up in Texas as the son of Indian immigrants and a self-described “turban-wearing\, brown-skinned\, beard-loving Sikh\,” Simran Jeet Singh constantly confronted racism\, bullying\, and ethnic slurs. But\, where others may have grown bitter or angry\, he looked to the lessons of Sikh teachings he grew up with to seek out the good in every situation and find positive ways to direct his energy. These tenets of love and service to others empowered him to forge a life of connection and a commitment to justice that catapulted him to the national stage. \nCurrently\, Dr. Simran Jeet Singh is also a Soros Equality Fellow with the Open Society Foundations\, a Senior Adviser on Equity and Inclusion for YSC Consulting\, a Senior Adviser for Aspen Institute’s Religion & Society Program\, and host of the podcast\, Wisdom & Practice\, with the Aspen Institute and PRX. He was recently named a 2022 Atlantic Fellow for Racial Equity. He lives with his family in New York City. For more information on Speaker\, please visit www.prhspeakers.com. \nReception\nLocation: Rector Terrace (weather permitting) and Loder Hall\nAddress: 2121 Sheridan Road\, Evanston\nTime: Immediately following Commencement \n  \nPARKING \nThe small lot on Garrett Place will be reserved for the Board of Trustees meeting\, but open for all access after the Commencement ceremony on Friday\, May 9. SUMMARY:Workshop on Animating Antiracism as a Way of Being And…
DESCRIPTION:Talking about race and racial discrimination can be hard\, but it’s important to understand how to fix these ongoing social issues. When we talk about belonging and diversity as strengths for communities and organizations\, we must also recognize the challenges preventing these goals. Crossroads’ experience shows that understanding antiracism and what it requires from leaders is key to creating diverse\, fair\, and welcoming places. This involves developing a shared understanding of how systemic discrimination\, particularly racism\, operates within institutions\, practicing the identification of its impacts in people and their communities\, recognizing how institutions unintentionally contribute to these impacts\, and exploring tools for imagining solutions. This special edition of Crossroads foundational workshop will provide participants with an expanded exploration of institutional organizing and how to navigate the climate of retrenchment permeating our culture. \nWorkshop Objectives: \n• Introduce a way to understand antiracism and what it asks of institutions and their leaders. \n• Surface how systemic racism arises from a culture that values dominance as a core principle. \n• Explore how our systems uphold systemic discrimination\, benefiting dominant groups and harming marginalized ones\, especially people of color. \n• Begin exploring the long-term work needed to break down systemic racial injustice in institutions and society.

SUMMARY:Wounded Light: Sacred Art in the Neon City
DESCRIPTION:Artist Joseph Malham will offer reflections on his work during an Opening Night Reception on Friday\, August 22 at 5pm. The event will take place outside the Chapel of the Unnamed Faithful\, located in the Cross Tower Room at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. \nAll are invited to this evening of art\, faith\, and conversation. \nThis fall\, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary is honored to present Wounded Light: Sacred Art in the Neon City\, an exhibition of iconographic art by Chicago-based artist Joseph Malham. \nMany of the works in Wounded Light are created with found and distressed materials such as discarded wood boards\, aged canvases\, and other repurposed surfaces that bear the mark of time and loss. These surfaces became sacred ground themselves serving as witness to both suffering and transformation. Created during a period of profound global isolation\, these imperfect and wounded objects reflect a core truth: that even in our brokenness\, we are capable to reflect light where divine radiance breaks through the fractured\, the forgotten\, and the forsaken. \nFor over two decades\, Malham has engaged deeply in both the artistic and theological dimension of sacred image making. As an artist in residence at St. Gregory the Great Church in Chicago\, he has not only created sacred icons but also led workshops\, retreats\, and lectures across the country\, fostering a renewed understanding of iconography as a living spiritual practice. Malham fuses ancient iconographic traditions with randomly encountered object – the rubble and refuse of everyday life – salvaged from the alleys\, streets\, and shadows of Chicago’s urban wilderness. \nAt the heart of Wounded Light is the Heroes of Faith & Justice series\, which honors lay and religious men and women from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds who have witnessed Christ through acts of justice\, mercy\, and service to the people of God in Chicago. For Malham\, the city is not merely a backdrop but sacred ground. He writes “Chicago was the soil of their ministry but faith was the seed.” \nIn addition to his visual work\, Malham is the author of four books. In 2015 Malham he was awarded the Bishop Quarter Award\, by Cardinal Cupich in recognition of his services to the Archdiocese of Chicago. \nThis exhibition invites viewers into a contemplative encounter with the holiness\, revealed not in perfection but in the luminous and enduring presence that emerges through what is wounded\, weathered\, and redeemed. \nWounded Light will be on view throughout August and into mid-September 2025\, with works displayed across all three floors of Garrett’s main building. \nFor more information about Joseph Malham’s work\, please visit www.trinityicons.com. \n  \n
