DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Cátedra Paulo Freire 2024\, held in-person and online on March 14–15. \nIn the contemporary landscape of global education\, the rise of hate\, greed\, prejudice\, and authoritarianism poses significant challenges to the principles of critical pedagogy. As we traverse the educational landscape of the 21st century\, Cátedra Paulo Freire 2024\, “Navigating Educational Landscape in Unsettling Times” conference invites educators\, researchers\, activists\, and church leaders to join forces in safeguarding the transformative power of education against the encroachment of authoritarian ideologies. \nOur speaker is renowned critical educator and public intellectual Henry Giroux\, a prolific author\, and political commentator who is one of the founders of critical pedagogy in the USA and has contributed immensely to disseminating its principles of social justice\, democracy\, and human solidarity. Giroux will explore the theme “Critical Pedagogy in the Age of Emerging Authoritarianism\,” showing how education plays a fundamental role in fighting corporate interests that attempt to restrict people’s civil rights and diminish our critical political consciousness to prevent the birth of a substantive democracy. \nAs educators who profess a faith\, a commitment to justice\, and an unyielding quest for democracy\, we are committed to re-imagining\, developing\, and expanding horizons for the future where critical pedagogy thrives as a site of hope\, resilience\, and empowerment in the face of emerging challenges. \nThe keynote address on March 14 will be held both in person and online at 7 PM (CST) with translation available for Spanish speakers. DESCRIPTION:Join a conversation with Rev. Praveen Raj N.L\, MAPM 2nd year student\, on ‘Envisioning the Church of the Multitude in the Context of the Unstoppable Rise of Hindu Nationalism in India’. The multitude is the very life of India\, but in a country known for its diversity\, the current BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) leads government\, controls\, orders\, and homogenizes the nation\, people\, language\, and culture to promote Hindutva ideology. In the process of homogenization\, the people on the periphery of society\, such as Dalits\, refugees\, the LGBTQ community\, and so on\, are routinely excluded. The people in the margins smell the politics of death. Let us discuss the potential of envisioning an ecclesiology that denies the logic of ‘Oneness’ and affirms the logic of ‘manyness’ of the ‘Multitude.’

DESCRIPTION:James H. Cone and Emilie M. Townes Lectureship at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.  The lectureship honors the scholarship\, ministries\, and lives of two of our most prominent alums and will be focused on Black Religious Thought and the Black Religious Experience. The inaugural lecture will be delivered by Rev. Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas. \nThe event will take place at 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Unnamed Faithful (will be livestreamed) \nAdditional Details: There will be a lunch panel for Garrett students and alum that will include four Garrett students exploring the challenges that face black people across the globe and thinking together about the possibilities of our collective life and flourishing.
