DESCRIPTION:CBE and the Stead Center will host a lunch and learn in room 205 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Our speaker will be the Rev. Dr. AnneMarie Mingo\, Associate Professor of Ethics\, Culture\, and Moral Leadership and Director of the Metro-Urban Institute at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. She will discuss her book Have You Got Good Religion: Black Women’s Faith\, Courage\, and Moral Leadership in the Civil Rights Movement and will also sign books. Register here for the Lunch and Learn! \nThe James Cone-Emilie Townes Lecture will commence at 4:00 pm. Dr. Walter Fluker will serve as our keynote speaker\, and Rev. Dr. Julian Armand Cook will be a special guest. Dr. Cook studied under Dr. Fluker at Boston University and worked as a student assistant for the Thurman archives project.  \nThis year’s James H. Cone and Emilie M. Townes’ Lecture will feature Dr. Walter Fluker. Fluker’s lecture\, “Congregating\, Conjuring\, and Conspiring at Crossings: James H. Cone\, Emilie M. Townes\, and the Call to ‘Wake Up Running\,'” will explore the intersecting legacies of James H. Cone and Emilie M. Townes within the framework of Black theology and womanist ethics.  The lecture will highlight the transformative concepts of congregating\, conjuring\, and conspiring that Fluker introduced and both Cone and Townes emphasized in their work. These themes reveal the profound power of marginalized communities to resist oppression and create new futures through faith\, justice\, and collective action. \nThe Stead Center will provide a gallery of Howard Thurman’s quotes and meditations in the chapel for persons to experience throughout the day. \nThere is no cost to this event\, but registration is REQUIRED.

SUMMARY:Let's Talk Globally: Religious-racial cultural imagination(s) in Britain
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person or online for a conversation with Medomfo Owusu\, a 1st year MDiv student as she explores the racial-religious cultural imagination of the British public towards soulful soundscapes. Soulful soundscapes\, a Black Catholic term for sonic expressions of Africana Christianities in religious and nonreligious settings\, has been present in Britain for centuries by various communities from the African diaspora\, and yet is othered or erased from the cultural imagination of predominantly Eurocentric views of the British public. Using the soulful soundscapes of the 2018 Royal Wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as our starting point\, this conversation aims to foster critical discussions of racial-religious cultural imaginations concerning soundscapes\, worship and historical narratives.

DESCRIPTION:The Organizing for Environmental Justice course\, running Fridays from 9 AM to 12 PM CT (January 31–May 7)\, is led by Rev. Brian Sauder and Rev. Veronica Johnson. Learn about organizing efforts for environmental justice with engaging discussions and insights. This course provides students access and learning through story telling by leaders at Faith in Place (www.faithinplace.org)\, a leading faith-based environmental justice nonprofit organization. This course will give students the practical tools and information to imagine\, understand\, and even create their own nonprofit organization.    \n* Enroll: Current Garrett students register online and Non-Garrett students must apply as nondegree/enrichment students\, please reach out to the Garrett Admissions Office at getadmitted@garrett.edu.  \n* Tuition: $2\,697 for academic credit\, $249 for audit/CEUs for the 3-hour course (fees not included). SUMMARY:The 2024 Styberg Preaching Institute Workshop: Preaching and AI
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed for preachers and ministry leaders interested in exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and preaching. Participants will be guided by Reverend Jesus Rodriguez-Cortes to understand the fundamental concepts of AI and its relevance in ministry. Throughout the two days\, participants will be able to gain practical skills using AI tools for sermon preparation\, multimedia production\, and community engagement. In addition to leaving the workshop with a personalized plan for integrating AI tools into their preaching practices\, they will have developed a critical perspective on the ethical implications of using AI in Ministry. \nAbout the workshop leader: \nRev. Rodriguez-Cortes has 30 years of experience in the Telecommunications Industry\, covering a broad spectrum of technologies. He is accomplished in network design and operation including integrating AI in process and quality management and has had charge of educational events for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Puerto Rico for many years.
