SUMMARY:Building an Abolitionist Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to build an abolitionist in the face of authoritarianism? How do Black-serving churches\, civic organizations and communities cultivate spaces of safety\, flourishing and liberation? \nThere is a critical connection among religion\, education\, and democracy. The Black church has historically created educational sanctuaries to teach their community what dominant society disallows. Education that transgresses hegemonic boundaries is a tool of resistance and liberation. From hush harbors and backwood classrooms to freedom schools\, seminaries\, and Historically Black Colleges\, and Universities\, the Black religious experience has (re)educated the miseducated to uplift the Black community and empower social action. \nIn this course\, learn how to build an Abolitionist Sanctuary in your congregation and community. Participants will use Abolition Academy’s social learning platform and receive a verified certificate in Abolition as Social Change. To learn more about our facilitator Rev. Dr. Nikia Smith Robert\, click here. \nSpace is limited\, so registration is required.

SUMMARY:Let's Talk Globally: To Care for the Asian self is to care for the nonhumans
DESCRIPTION:“To care for the Asian self is to care for the nonhumans.” Curious about what this might mean? Join us in person or online for a meal and conversation with Dr. Dong Hyeon Jeong\, whose book Embracing the Nonhuman in the Gospel of Mark has sparked interest among both biblical scholars and those who care deeply about “creation and creatures great and small.” Together we’ll consider the following: What ecological and nonhuman roots ground our diasporic belonging? How does the ecological lens accentuate Asian identities? This salon-style gathering invites fresh ways of narrating identity and belonging as intimately connected to the nonhuman elements of creation. We will reflect on how animals\, plants\, and ecosystems shape our sense of self and community\, and what this means for cultivating belonging in a complex\, diasporic world. Co-sponsored by the Job Institute for Spiritual Formation and the Office of Student Affairs.

SUMMARY:Faithful Preaching for our Times
DESCRIPTION:Styberg Preaching Institute 20th Anniversary Event\nOctober 7 – 9\, 2025 at Garrett Seminary\n  \nIn a world increasingly shaped by authoritarianism\, nationalism\, and historical revisionism\, the call to preach with steadfastness\, mutual accountability\, courage\, and clarity has never been more urgent. Faithful Preaching for Our Times is a homiletics conference that gathers pastors\, theologians\, scholars\, and activists to explore just and liberative approaches to proclaiming the gospel. Together\, we will examine how preaching can confront the forces that distort truth\, suppress justice\, and silence the vulnerable—while embodying a faith that resists\, liberates\, and restores in sustained ways. Through workshops\, plenaries\, and worship\, this gathering invites preachers to engage their prophetic vocation with theological depth and bold imagination for the challenges of our time. \n  \nVisit garrett.edu/styberg2025 to learn more.

SUMMARY:2025 Academic Convocation
DESCRIPTION:Garrett Seminary will celebrate the beginning of the 2025-2026 academic year with its Convocation service on Wednesday\, September 10. We are deeply honored that Dr. Peter Mageto (G-ETS 2001 & 2004)\, Vice Chancellor of Africa University in Mutare\, Zimbabwe and a proud alumnus of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary\, will serve as guest speaker at this year’s Convocation. This is a moment of great pride\, as Dr. Mageto returns to his alma mater to reflect on the values that continue to shape his leadership and vision. \nHis presence comes as we celebrate the ongoing Mageto Fellows Program—which offers full scholarships for African students to study in Evanston—and as we explore new avenues for collaboration between our institutions. True to Africa University’s purpose of Investing in Africa’s Future and its commitment to training leaders for transformative leadership\, this partnership embodies the power of education to shape change-makers for the continent and the world. \nAs Garrett welcomes its incoming class\, this gathering becomes a testimony of how Africa University and Garrett are working together for a connectional and global United Methodist Church—naming and celebrating how God is alive in our fellowship\, how faith is deepened when we uproot the harm colonialism left in its wake\, and how we labor together for mutual flourishing. All are invited to join us in marking this important start to the year\, as we prepare to train leaders for the thriving of the church and the healing of the world. \nPlease join in person at 4 p.m. (CDT) on September 10th in the Chapel of the Unnamed Faithful\, or via livestream! \nRev.
