SUMMARY:Liberating Theologies: Hope\, Imagination\, and ... Resisting Otherwise (December Conversation)
DESCRIPTION:Join this conversation live to hear Dr. Nancy Elizabeth Bedford\, Dr. Elyssa Salinas\, and Dr. Roberto Che Espinoza come together to imagine what liberating theologies can be and do in our time. Drawing from queer theory\, decolonial thought\, Latin American liberation theology\, and transnational feminist wisdom\, we ask how hope becomes a radical act\, how imagination opens us beyond the limits of empire\, and how resistance can take shape in ways that refuse the status quo. \nTogether we explore what it means to live\, think\, and believe otherwise — cultivating a theology that is embodied\, communal\, and alive to the cries of the world. \nThis live conversation will be recorded. A zoom link will be sent to all who register

SUMMARY:She Refuses To Be Comforted: Black Theology and A Mary Who Cries
DESCRIPTION:The Stead Center and the Center for the Church and Black Experience welcome Rev. Dr. Amey Victoria Adkins-Jones for a Lunch and Learn\, where she will discuss her book\, Immaculate Misconceptions: A Black Mariology. \nAmey Victoria Adkins-Jones is Assistant Professor of Theology and Africana studies at Candler School of Theology (Emory University). A graduate of the University of Virginia and Duke Divinity School\, she received her Ph.D. in Religion from Duke University in 2016 with a Certificate in Feminist Theory. She was the first Black woman to graduate from the doctoral program in Christian theology and ethics. \nHer first book\, Immaculate Misconceptions: A Black Mariology centers the Black Madonna to examine how Christian theologies of purity influence who and what we deem to be sacred. She is at work on a second book project\, See No Evil\, which explores how visual technologies and AI impact public perception of violence and Black death. \nOutside of academia\, Rev. Dr. Adkins-Jones is an ordained Baptist minister who frequently preaches and teaches around the country\, and brings pastoral sensibility to her work centering social justice. She shares life with her beloved spouse and their four children in Atlanta\, GA.

SUMMARY:Who am I… As a theologian?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our fall discernment series as we explore our roles in ministry and how we live them out. Our fourth and final event this fall will focus on understanding who we are called to be as theologians. In this hour-long session\, we’ll explore what it means to be a theological thinker\, both in the church and in the academy. We’ll explore the important ways theological thinkers influence our world and begin to understand how we think and reflect theologically. Finally\, we will consider ways in which we can be further resourced for this work.

SUMMARY:Embodied Crossings: Migration\, Power\, and Sacred Imagination
DESCRIPTION:We hope to listen\, reflect\, and imagine together the intersections of theology\, migration\, and diaspora especially in these troubling times. As minoritized communities/persons living in the US\, we are experiencing traumatic events and exposures that not only trouble our bodies and minds but also our souls as we ask God “why is this happening to us/me?” We seek to foster communal strength\, bridge-building\, and sacred spaces for our tired and weary communities.

SUMMARY:Building an Abolitionist Sanctuary

Participants will use Abolition Academy’s social learning platform and receive a verified certificate in Abolition as Social Change. To learn more about our facilitator Rev. SUMMARY:Let's Talk Globally: To Care for the Asian self is to care for the nonhumans
DESCRIPTION:“To care for the Asian self is to care for the nonhumans.” Curious about what this might mean? Join us in person or online for a meal and conversation with Dr. Dong Hyeon Jeong\, whose book Embracing the Nonhuman in the Gospel of Mark has sparked interest among both biblical scholars and those who care deeply about “creation and creatures great and small.” Together we’ll consider the following: What ecological and nonhuman roots ground our diasporic belonging? How does the ecological lens accentuate Asian identities? This salon-style gathering invites fresh ways of narrating identity and belonging as intimately connected to the nonhuman elements of creation. We will reflect on how animals\, plants\, and ecosystems shape our sense of self and community\, and what this means for cultivating belonging in a complex\, diasporic world. Co-sponsored by the Job Institute for Spiritual Formation and the Office of Student Affairs.
