Dr. John Chawarika\, MAPCC second-year student\, will facilitate the discussion and examine judgmental and negative attitudes towards LGBTQ+ communities influenced by both religious and political circles. This presentation and conversation will show how pastoral care can play an important role in healing relationships and promoting integration of queer communities into the mainstream society of post-independence Zimbabwe.  \nThe point of these conversations is to inform\, educate\, and discuss international issues that do not always get media attention in the US. Dr. Reginald Blount is the Murray H. Leiffer Associate Professor of Formation\, Leadership\, and Culture and Director of the Center for the Church and the Black Experience at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. He also serves as the pastor at Arnett Chapel AME in Chicago. Blount has spoken nationally and internationally at numerous conferences and workshops helping faith communities envision new and creative ways to minister to\, with\, and on behalf of young people. Blount earned his Ph.D. from Garrett-Evangelical and Northwestern University’s joint program in religious and theological studies\, focusing on the areas of Christian education and youth ministry. He received his M.Div. from Candler School of Theology.

DESCRIPTION:As ministry changes on a foundational level\, more and more students are pursuing their call to ministry bi- or multi-vocationally. For some\, this is a response to the financial and material complexity of being a minister at this moment in time. For others\, multi-vocational ministry is the natural result of feeling called in more ways than one\, to ministry that puts an individual in multiple ministerial spaces both inside and outside of the Church.  \nIf this sounds like you\, or if you are a local ministry leader seeking wisdom around how to prepare students for ministry and theological education in this current moment\, join us on July 7th for this important conversation. We will be joined by Rev. Dr. Reginald Blount as well as a few other guests who are serving in multi-vocational ministry contexts. \nSpeakers \n\nDr. Reginald Blount is a bi-vocational minister himself serving at the Murray H. Leiffer Associate Professor of Formation\, Leadership\, and Culture and Director of the Center for the Church and the Black Experience at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary while also serving as the pastor at Arnett Chapel AME in Chicago.  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \nRev. Luke Pepper is an ordained United Methodist deacon and currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Northern Illinois Conference Order of Deacon. DESCRIPTION:What is the future of United Methodist Ministry?  \nThis question may be more relevant now than it ever has been before. \nAt Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary\, we believe that the call of the Deacon is the future of ministry in The United Methodist Church. Since the founding of the Order of the Deacon\, Garrett has been a leader in preparing deacons for ministry\, and for following these leaders into the public square as agents of change for the Church\, for our neighborhoods\, and for the world. The call of the deacon is not peripheral at Garrett\, it is core to the mission of the Seminary as evidenced by the rich cohort of incoming deacons that we admit every year. \nRev. Dr. Virginia Lee\nIn light of this deep commitment to the Order of the Deacon\, Garrett is hosting a virtual conversation with Rev. Dr. Virginia Lee titled\, “The Call of the Deacon and the Future of United Methodist Ministry.” This event will be a great chance to learn both about Garrett\, and about the work that deacons are doing to lead the Church into new and innovative directions.
