Discern God's Call

If you are just beginning to feel called to ministry, aren’t yet sure where to begin, and want to “try” theological education without the larger time and financial commitment of a degree program, certificates are an affordable way gain up to 15 credit hours toward a degree program as you continue to discern God’s call in your life. 

Professional Development

As a clergy or lay person interested in or already working in a particular area of ministry, our certificate programs integrate rigorous academics and real-world application that better prepare you professionally for your vocational setting. The majority of our certificate programs offer online and intensive classes, so your education can complement and not compete with your current work. Upon successful completion, you’ll gain a Garrett-Evangelical certificate in your chosen area of study that you can highlight on your resume or LinkedIn profile. 

United Methodists interested in pursuing the professional certification through GBHEM can fulfill the educational requirements through the UMC Professional Certification tracks within the Christian Education, Evangelism and Church Planting, and Music Ministry certificates, or through the UMC Professional Certification in Spiritual Formation program.

About Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary

Founded in 1853, Garrett-Evangelical is a graduate school of theology related to The United Methodist Church with an ecumenical outreach. We challenge persons and faith communities to fashion themselves as servant leaders who are equipped to listen, recognize, analyze, and respond to the needs of our communities out of a faithful theological imagination rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Located on the campus of Northwestern University, upon the shores of Lake Michigan and on the outskirts of Chicago, Garrett-Evangelical is a place to nurture mind, body, and spirit.
