Living through disorienting times of unprecedented chaos, fear, and confusion calls for new ways of being community together. Join Rev. Dr. Brenda Buckwell for this six-week online course where we will explore spiritual direction, the potential in soul care, and the foundation of personal and communal life with the power for transfiguration through silence. Together we will:

  • Experience the power of silence.
  • Engage a sense liberation and freedom through the Dark Night.
  • Explore levels of storytelling and holy listening.
  • Practice formational questions and discern listening filters.
  • Discover Three-Way-Listening.
  • Contemplate the Process of Becoming.

From the newest person of prayer to the experienced pray-er, all will learn tools to engage self, others and community in liberation from disorientation to awakening God’s transformative presence among us.

Course Information

For successful completion of 2 CEUs students will:

  1. Post two insights and wisdom from readings and weekly presentations. (Due each Wednesday)
  2. Respond to at least two classmate postings weekly. (Due each Friday)
  3. Write reflection papers on topic of the week and prayer experience. (Due Saturdays weekly)
  4. An optional reflection paper on your spiritual journey with silence, personally and communally. (Due Friday August 21)
  5. Attend two zoom practice classes – one in the third week and one in the final week.

The student will need for participation in this class:

  1. This class is asynchronistic, meaning you will post and read on your own time schedule, except for 2 synchronistic video classes. 
    1. The mid-class listening practice will be scheduled at the convenience of participants. This mid-class, video conference will meet the third week.
    2. The time and date of this final zoom conference will be determined by the class through the discussion board. To sign up for Zoom.us for a video conference group. Simple instructions for sign up will be up on the Moodle class site.

Rev. Dr. Brenda Buckwell, PCC is an innovative author and spiritual guide who educates, leads retreats, preaches and consults to create a foundational stance of spiritual direction for leaders and the congregation. As a coach she seeks to unleash the power of Christ for life’s watershed moments by increase of excellence and expand awareness of God. Brenda is adjunct faculty in spiritual formation at Ashland Theological Seminary and online for Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, CenterQuest and Coaching 4 Clergy. An ordained elder in the Methodist Tradition for over 30 years, Brenda has served as congregational pastor, co-founder of Hearts on Fire: The Fellowship of UM Spiritual Directors and Retreat Leaders and is founder of Living Streams Flowing Water, where she currently works. Brenda received her online teaching certification from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.  Two of her favorite spiritual disciplines are swimming and ballroom dancing. Brenda strives to be Amma for her children and grandchildren.

Cancellation Policies

Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary Course Cancellation Policy

Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary reserves the right to cancel the course if a minimum participation level is not reached. If we cancel this offering, participants will be notified of the cancellation 7 business days before the offering’s start date and will receive a full refund.

Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary Policy for Participant Cancellation

Participants can withdraw from the course in writing via e-mail to connectional.learning@garrett.edu.

Refunds will be provided according to this schedule:

  • Withdrawals received more than 30 days prior to the course's start date will receive: 100% refund.
  • Withdrawals received between 29 to 16 days prior to the course's start date will receive: 50% refund.

No refunds will be issued for withdrawals received 15 days or less before the course starts.
