2020 General Conference Seminar
Due to the postponement of General Conference, the General Conference Seminar Trip has been cancelled.
This course is a travel seminar led by Dr. Barry Bryant, Associate Professor of United Methodist and Wesleyan Studies at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and is being offered in conjunction with the 2020 United Methodist General Conference, May 5-15, 2020, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The purpose of the seminar is to critically and creatively analyze the events of General Conference in such a way that facilitates theological reflection with an imagination that leads to a reimagined international Methodism that is post-colonial and inclusive of all people regardless of race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.
The seminar is open to current Garrett-Evangelical students, as well as Garrett-Evangelical alums and friends.

President's Dining Room, Loder Hall
An information session will be held on February 12, 2020, at 12:00 p.m. in the President's Dining Room in Loder Hall at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Anyone who is interested in attending the travel seminar is highly encouraged to attend this information session. Those who cannot attend in person may attend via Zoom or request a recording of the session.
Alums and friends can sign up using the form in the "Garrett-Evangelical Alums and Friends" slider to have information on attending the session virtually via Zoom and/or having a recording of the information session sent to them.

Room and Board
A block of rooms has been requested through the Commission on General Conference for participants of this travel seminar. The anticipated costs are $960 for a shared room (2 people, 10 nights, tax included) or $1,925 for single room (10 nights, tax included).
Garrett-Evangelical alums and friends must let Rev. Katye Chambers know no later than March 8th if they want a room from our room block. After March 8th, you will be responsible for finding your own housing. Information on other hotel options in the area can be found here.
All participants are responsibile for their own food throughout the trip.
Garrett-Evangelical will be renting a van to drive from the seminary to Minneapolis and back. Garrett-Evangelical students will have prioirty access to seating and seating will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. The travel costs will be split among the riders and will depend on the number of passengers.
Once all seats in the van are claimed, remaining seminar participants will be responsible for providing and coordinating their own travel to and from Minneapolis, and covering their own travel costs. Click here for more information on traveling to Minneapolis.
Current Garrett-Evangelical Students
Current Garrett-Evangelical students may attend the travel seminar in one of three ways:
- Taking the class for academic credit (per credit tuition, student does all assignments) | Download Syllabus
- Auditing the class (audit fee, student does some assignments) | Download Syllabus
- Tag along for General Conference (no class fee, student does no assignments but participates in daily debrief)
For students wishing to take the seminar for academic credit, the Registrar's Office will allow you to register for the course as late as February 14, 2020, without paying a late registration fee. Students register for the course for academic credit or as an auditor through the normal registration process. Garrett-Evangelical Alums and Friends
Garrett-Evangelical alums may attend the travel seminar in one of two ways:
- Take the seminar for CEUs ($450 CEU fee for 6 CEUs, complete some assignments, participates in daily debrief and pre-General Conference Zoom sessions). If you are interested in CEUs, please contact Martha Rudy at email@example.com or 847.866.3876.
- Tag along for General Conference (no CEUs, $150 fee includes opportunity to participate in daily debrief and 3 pre-General Conference Zoom sessions)
