The Music Director (Director) functions as a member of the Worship Planning Team whose task is to coordinate the various expressions of faith into the worship service, including music and other liturgical arts. This team includes the pastor(s), Director, and members of appropriate Teams, as well as other staff and volunteers relating to this ministry. The Director is responsible for incorporating various artistic expressions of faith that are appropriate to the content of the service and in keeping with the identity of the Broadway congregation. The Director is responsible for developing the music and worship arts ministries at Broadway United Methodist Church.

General Employment Understandings

TheDirectorisexpectedtobepresentforallSundaymorningservices, service piano accompanist, weekly Broadway choir rehearsals, special services (Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Easter and Christmas Eve). This includes all special services throughout the year (specifically Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Easter and Christmas Eve). Participation in other services of the congregation may be done on a mutually agreed upon basis with the Worship Planning Team.

Coordinateandsuperviseallcreativestaffandvolunteersrelatedtothe adult choir, youth choirs, ensembles, liturgical dance, reader’s theater and other performance-related individuals or groups.

Provideinstrumental(normallypianoororgan)musicfortheBroadway Sunday morning services (service music as well as congregational singing), special services, and the Broadway Choir, ensemble and soloist rehearsals and presentations.

Choirdirection–Recruitmembersforanddeveloptheadultchoir,small group ensemble programs and other choirs as time and resources permit. The Director shall conduct and accompany scheduled choir rehearsals for up to two hours per week, allowing additional time when preparing for holiday services. The Director shall lead the choir in rehearsal and in its participation in worship. Rehearsals for additional groups may be scheduled as needed.

Workwiththepastor(s)andappropriateTeamsinthecoordinationof music and liturgy and other church events. This includes hymns for worship and music for choir(s). The selection of music and creative elements is to be done with sensitivity to the seasons and themes of the worship services and the need for creative variety in the styles and origins of music.


7. Showparticularconsiderationforracialandgendersensitivitiesinmusic and worship arts lyrics and text to ensure that inclusive language is used. The Director shall have authority to make decisions about the use of inclusive language in consultation with the pastor(s).

Additional Position Benefits

Asavailable,planandprovidemusicforweddings,commitment ceremonies, funerals, and memorial services. The Director shall have “right of refusal” for these events. If the Director elects to participate, a predetermined honorarium must be provided by the parties planning the service.

TheDirectormayuseBroadway’sbuildingandmusicalinstrumentsfor private lessons or non-church rehearsals without cost, contingent upon the availability of the building space on the church calendar. Scheduling for these lessons must be done in advance through the church office.
