Wesley Foundation at Michigan State University

The MSU Wesley Board is seeking to hire a dedicated, innovative Director to lead the non-profit
corporation and the spiritual development of the students. The Director will lead Wesley’s Board
and student leadership in creating a diverse Christian community of young adults that loves
without exception, serves without judgement, and rejoices without restraint.
Candidates should desire to grow the faith community in number and diversity, both of
theological perspective and in ways that reflect the diversity of the MSU campus.
Skill Set Desired: organizational skills, fund development, board development, build capacity for
invitation and hospitality, partner and collaborate with other ministries, marketing (social media)
Job Responsibilities:
  • Lead the Wesley Non-Profit Corporation
  • Provide Leadership
  • Maintain/create healthy leadership teams: Board, Student Leadership Team
  • Lead teams in establishing and implementing goals for Wesley
  • Evaluate progress toward goals
Grow Leadership
  • Recruit and develop student leaders and board members
  • Plan for training for the ministry team

    Serve as the Executive Administrator

  • Oversight
  • Recruit, hire, and supervise student staff
  • Ensure maintenance of the organizational assets (equipment, budgets, accounts, fundraising information); organizational paperwork (e.g. non-profit corporation, registered student organization)
 Fund Development
  • Assist the Board in fund development, including nurturing new and continuing Covenant Church relationships, existing and new initiatives
  • Work with the volunteer Board of Directors that includes existing and new
  • Lead the Wesley Board to encourage local churches and Wesley alumni to support the Foundation
Organization Accountability
  • Report to the Board, the Division of Higher Education and Campus Ministry, and others as required about programs, budgets, and evaluation of progress toward goals
  • Meet Division of Higher Education and Campus Ministry benchmarks:
    • Maintain 50 “active” students (participating 2+ times per month)
    • Place 2 interns through EncounterMICall
    • Relate to 2 University offices
  • Ensure awareness of Wesley’s values and activities to students and stakeholders, including: the campus community, the Board, local churches, home churches of Wesley students, the affiliated District, the Michigan Conference, and the Division of Higher Education and Campus Ministry
  • Interface with East Lansing University United Methodist Church staff and leadership related to shared mission to the campus community and building management
  • Provide Spiritual Leadership to Students
Personal Example
  • Model an authentic and healthy spiritual lifestyle, including Sabbath and other forms of self-care
  • Set goals for personal growth and monitor progress towards those goals
Corporate Spirituality
  • Lead and/or supervise corporate worship and other group activities promoting student spiritual growth
  • Continue and grow the collaboration with UUMC Reach service
Service Opportunities
  • Implement meaningful and transformative service opportunities (4 annually)
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate these service experiences
  • Individual/Small Group Spirituality
  • By guidance and example, assist students to develop and reach spiritual goals
  • Provide direct spiritual leadership to the Student Leadership Team
  • Offer spiritual small groups to all Wesley students and provide them as necessary, directly and/or through others
Pastoral Care & Counseling
  • Provide for pastoral care
  • Provide for vocational counseling
  • Direct students to appropriate campus resources for mental/physical health counsel
  • Community Relations
  • Participate in/take leadership in some community concern activities that are consistent with Christian community action
  • Participate in the Campus Religious Leaders Association
Job Requirements:
Baccalaureate degree (required)
Master’s degree (preferred) in a religious field, such as ThM or MDiv
Relevant experience in ministry and/or religious non-profit work will be considered
Familiarity with campus and young adult culture
Familiarity with the United Methodist Church
