Methodist Studies Students at Garrett-Evangelical
To assist students at partner institutions in meeting United Methodist ordination requirements, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary will be offering a certificate in United Methodist Studies. The certificate consists of fifteen hours of coursework which meets six key United Methodist educational requirements - United Methodist History, Doctrine, and Polity; Evangelism; Mission of the Church in the World; and Worship. The certificate is currently available to United Methodist students studying at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS), Chicago Theological Seminary (CTS), Eden Theological Seminary, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and the University of Chicago Divinity School. We continue to have conversations with other schools to expand this program. More information about specific courses and the requirements that they meet can be found below.
Students at partner schools interested in studying at Garrett-Evangelical will complete a Guest Student registration form and submit it to their home school registrar for approval. The registrar will then forward approved forms to the Garrett-Evangelical registrar for registration. The form should be completed at least 4 weeks before the term starts in which a student wishes to take a class. This form is available linked below as well. Information about term begin and end dates as well as registration and other deadlines can be found on the appropriate academic calendar on the Office of the Registrar portal page.
Guest students will be contacted once the course registration has been received and processed; the student will also be notified should the course be full or become unavailable. The guest student will be given login information for the Garrett-Evangelical online portal and Moodle learning management system with instructions for accessing these sites once registration is complete.
Enrolled degree students at Chicago Theological Seminary are eligible to enroll in courses using the normal ACTS cross-registration procedures. The appropriate forms are available from your registrar.
United Methodist Certificate Courses
Information about the specific courses being offered to meet the United Methodist Certificate requirements can be found below. These documents are sorted first by requirement and then by term. Students wishing to complete the certificate must take either the two on-campus United Methodist Studies courses or the three online Untied Methodist Studies courses and then choose one of the courses listed for each of the other requirement categories. You may contact Rev. Vince McGlothin-Eller, Garrett-Evangelical registrar, if you have questions about any of these courses.
Additional courses are available for guest students with the approval of their registrar. These courses might be used to fulfill other educational requirements or interests but do not meet the requirements for the United Methodist Certificate.
Guest students are expected to comply with the academic policies and procedures of Garrett-Evangelical while taking Garrett-Evangelical courses. An electronic version of the Academic Handbook can be found on the Office of the Registrar portal page.
Tuition and Fees
Tuition is charged for each course based on the number of hours enrolled. Current fees can be found on the Costs and Financial Aid page on the main Garrett-Evangelical website. Guest students will be charged at the Masters level. ACTS students pay tuition directly to their home school.
**Tuition and fees are subject to change.**
Guest students can pay with a credit card either online through the Garrett-Evangelical portal or by calling the Garrett-Evangelical cashier (847.866.3917). Payments may also be made by check. Failure to pay before the term begins will result in a business hold. Guest students who are placed on hold will not be able to take further courses at Garrett-Evangelical and will not receive grades until the hold is cleared. Guest students are not eligible for financial aid from Garrett-Evangelical.
