While in seminary, field education provided me with tremendous opportunities to practice ministry and develop as a religious professional. While pastoring congregations, I was at my professional best when the church staff included a seminary intern. Now, as retirement from the paid phase of my professional life approaches, I am privileged to be the Director of Field Education at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Field education provides the process for applying the theories of the classroom to the practice of ministry while encouraging constant reflection—all with the hope that the developmental process will continue well beyond seminary.
