A Rhythm for All Seasons: A Spiritual Journey Through the Liturgical Year
February 27 – April 7, 2017
The Reverend Dr. John Winn, Instructor
2 CEU’s $300.00
Liturgical Lectionaries have been around since the Fourth Century, maybe even earlier. After having a long term love affair with various lectionaries, most notably the Common Lectionary and its revisions, John Winn decided to create a lectionary of his own. It would be a New Testament Lectionary. Did you know that the earliest lectionaries were New Testament Lectionaries? Neither did he, until he did a season of self-guided study at the Yale Divinity School Library.
It later resulted in his book, Selections: A Journey Toward Spiritual Formation, which will be the compass for this particular six-week online class. Its path is the six seasons of the Christian Year, with a twist: John divides the long Pentecost Season at the usual place, the last Sunday in August, into a seventh season he calls Missiontide. Each week we’ll focus on a particular season, so that you’ll be guided through the full liturgical year during the course.
The design of the class is repetition with variation. You will be asked to do a repeat reading of the same gospel and epistle reading each day of the week. Also, you will be introduced to a variation of lectio divina disciplines to help you internalize the readings and create something of your own. Every season has a rhythm and you will add your own beat to it. You will like this! The end result hoped for is a heartwarming, deepening, soul-searching journey toward spiritual formation. And a review of the themes, scriptures, and rhythms of the Christian liturgical year.
The class requires active participation in an on-line format, with 3-4 hours of weekly reading, reflective practice, postings, and responses to fellow participants. A weekly live video conference is scheduled on Thursdays at 4 p.m. Central Daylight Time.
Selections: A Journey Toward Spiritual Formation by John Winn is available from Amazon, AuthorHouse, Barnes and Noble or other sources in paper back, Kindle or Nook. You may also enjoy exploring John’s earlier book, For All Seasons, a series of prayers, proclamations, readings, responses, and planned spontaneity, with a foreword by Dr. Marcia McFee.
John Winn is a seasoned pastor, teacher, counselor, church and leadership consultant, who in retirement, has returned to one of his first loves, writing. His first book, For All Seasons, published in 2011, was well received. His latest book, Selections: A Journey Toward Spiritual Formation, the text for this course, is about a process, an interactive process, that will lead one to a deeper place in his or her own spiritual formation. He draws deeply from his own practice of ministry and personal experience in dealing with some of life’s most difficult issues.
After serving United Methodist churches of all sizes in the Louisiana Conference, he was asked by Bishop William Oden to create a process that would help maintain ministers in effective ministry. As a result he founded The Center for Pastoral Excellence, which received one of the first grants from the Lilly Foundation toward sustaining pastoral excellence. He is now the Mentor Emeritus of The Center.
