Garrett-Evangelical and Kellogg School of Management Honor the Inaugural Class of the Plus Program

EVANSTON, Illinois, April 2013 – On Tuesday, April 16, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management awarded certificates of completion to the inaugural class of the Plus Program at a dinner held at Northwestern University’s School of Law in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Philip Amerson, President of Garrett-Evangelical, and Ms. Liz Livingston Howard, Associate Director of Kellogg’s Center for Nonprofit Management, both offered words of appreciation for members of the inaugural class and their willingness to learn, engage, and support one another through this joint program.

Plus Program GraduationThe Plus Program, an executive education program specifically for religious leaders, is a distinctive collaboration between Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Each two-day session is comprised of a series of lectures, workshops and collaborative learning experiences. “With the combined expertise of the Kellogg faculty and the senior faculty at Garrett-Evangelical, the Plus Program curriculum will continue to develop and adapt to meet the number of problems facing our churches and communities in today’s ever-increasing complex world,” said Dr. Philip Amerson. “Garrett-Evangelical remains committed to the church and lifelong learning, and programs such as Plus fulfill the seminary’s mission to prepare leaders who are equipped to live and proclaim the Gospel.”

The inaugural class, including pastors, deacons, lay leaders, and educators, began the program in 2010. Nine United Methodist Conferences and three countries were represented. Among them, Rev. Sarai Case of the Desert Southwest Conference of The United Methodist Church said, “Every time I come to a two-day session of the Plus Program, I go back to my congregation renewed and with a sense of vigor for my ministry. I am truly grateful for this unique opportunity to further develop my own leadership skills.”

While reflecting on his time in the Plus Program, Rev. Wes Dorr, Minister of Education and Outreach at United Church of Rogers Park, a United Methodist Church in Chicago, Illinois, said, "I am able to take the lessons learned through the Plus Program and immediately apply them to my ministry. I have learned new ways of leading staff and have gained a better understanding of how to budget for outreach ministries. It has been refreshing to get a business education to compliment the M.Div. I earned from Garrett-Evangelical."
