Garrett-Evangelical Announces New Financial Aid Opportunities for UM Candidates

EVANSTONcross and flame color thumb 400, Illinois, July 2012 – As Garrett-Evangelical prepares to welcome a young, talented, and diverse student body this fall, the seminary continues to find additional ways to assist students financially. Garrett-Evangelical is committed to providing quality theological education while keeping students’ debt at minimum levels. In the upcoming academic year Garrett-Evangelical is projected to award 2.5 million dollars in financial assistance, yet the seminary is continually searching for ways to provide more. Most recently, the seminary has introduced the 50/50 match with annual conferences of The United Methodist Church and the Linked in Ministry Scholarship.

The seminary currently has an agreement with select annual conferences in which qualified students who are registered candidates for ministry receive a 50% match from the seminary of any tuition scholarship these students receive from their conference. This next year, the seminary is expanding this opportunity to include more annual conferences and more ministerial candidates.

Additionally, the seminary has started the Linked in Ministry Scholarship: a full-tuition scholarship awarded to the best academically qualified (with at least a 3.3 GPA) master's degree applicant from a United Methodist annual conference.  Students who are registered candidates for ministry and apply by February 1 are eligible for the following fall.  This is another way the seminary is reaching out through the United Methodist connectional system in order to continue the mission to educate bold leaders for the church and the world.

Rev. Becky Eberhart, Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management, states, “It is exciting to see Garrett-Evangelical continue to find ways to help students financially.  By partnering with annual conferences, we can provide more financial resources for our students. With the continued changing structure of student loans and the increased amount of student debt for most college graduates, there has never been a more important time to think creatively about financial aid.”
