FOOD, FAITH, AND JUSTICE: HOLY COMMUNION FOR THE WHOLE CREATION
This dynamic course will integrate a theology of holy communion with a critical examination of how we produce, distribute, and consume “our daily bread” in today’s economy, while also exploring practical ways individuals and communities can participate in alternative food practices that are holy, healthy and just.

Indoor Class Time: 8-11:30 a.m.
Lunch and Travel: 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Outdoor Field Learning: 1:30-4 p.m. (Various Locations)
DAILY OR 5-DAY PASSES TO CLASS SESSIONS AVAILABLE FOR LIFELONG LEARNING STUDENTS
Each day functions as a freestanding learning experience including: a theological focus on God’s invitation to participate in loving communion through a unique set of table practices; a critical examination of modern industrial agriculture’s destructive effects on people and the land; and practical strategies to help build a more sustainable and just food economy. Classes may be taken as individual days or may be purchased as a 5-Day series (see pricing below).
REGISTRATION FOR COURSE CREDIT
Course credit is available for Garrett-Evangelical and ACTS students through the normal registration procedures. The deadline for traditional students to register is May 1, 2013.
FIELD LEARNING
In addition to the morning class, which will include lectures, select media presentations, and discussion, there is the daily opportunity to share a communal meal with other participants and to spend the afternoon in hands-on learning experiences around the Chicago area. Dr. Timothy R. Eberhart is the Visiting Assistant Professor of Moral and Public Theology at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. He teaches in the areas of theology and ethics, concentrating on the relation of Christian doctrine to economic, environmental, and political theory. He also serves as Garrett-Evangelical’s representative for the newly formed Seminary Stewardship Alliance (SSA), a consortium of schools dedicated to reconnecting Christians with the biblical mandate to care for God's creation. He received his B.A. from St. Olaf College, his M.Div. from Vanderbilt Divinity School, and his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. Professor Eberhart is an ordained elder in the Dakotas Conference of the United Methodist Church and has served as a youth director, campus chaplain, and local pastor. Before coming to Garrett-Evangelical, he was the Coordinator for the Project in Leadership and Sustainability in the Cal Turner Program for Moral Leadership in the Professions at Vanderbilt. He has taught extensively in local church and community settings on a range of theological and ethical issues. He and his wife Rev. Becky Eberhart, the Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management at Garrett-Evangelical, and their three children reside in Evanston, Illinois. |
