Going Beyond the Collection

The United Library offers many services.  Just a few of them are detailed below.

Copying and Printing

Photo of 1st Century mummy in HibbardThree brand new machines were delivered for the 2007-08 year.  Two print in color or black and white and the third machine is a high speed black and white unit.  The copies are available for walk-up photocopying and are also networked to the library public terminals and serve as printers.   The cost for making copies is .05/side for Black & White; .25/side for color.  8.5x 11 paper is supplied.  Patrons are asked to provide their own ledger or legal paper if that is required.  Card stock may be used in the by-pass tray of the color machines.

Displays and Exhibits

Photo of Chicago Training School Display CaseThe  United Library hosts a variety of displays and exhibits.  Currently on view is a small display about the Chicago Training School for City, Home and Foreign Missions.  The School, which eventually merged with Garrett-Evangelical, was active in its mission to train women as deaconesses at the turn of the last century.

Programs & Events

To complement the academic units, the library occasionally offers supplemental programming.  Major events will be listed on the library "Welcome" home page.  One on-going program is our library book club.  Led by Al Caldwell, Emeritus Librarian, the book club meets over the lunch hour one day per month in one of the Garrett classrooms.  To learn the current book selection and meeting day, please contact our reference department.  The book club welcomes new participants.

Meeting Spaces

Photo of Methodist Room Garrett LibraryAlthough the United Library has numerous study carrels and tables for impromptu study groups, public spaces may also be reserved  by Garrett-Evangelical and Seabury-Western student organizations, faculty and staff for meetings, classes, receptions, and events.  Please contact the Library Director to schedule spaces.  External groups are also invited to make use of our architecturally stunning library facilities for conferences, and other occasions.  The library spaces are available weekends and evenings during the summers; weekend mornings and Friday evenings when school is in session.  External groups are urged to contact the Business Managers/Hospitality Offices of Seabury-Western or Garrett-Evangelical to learn about fees, if any, associated with utilities, security, custodial or incidental expenses for use of library spaces.  Hold your next event at the United Library!
