The Church and the Black Experience Celebrates 40 Years!

South Africa Trip 2010

Students and faculty of Garrett-Evangelical and several U.S. church leaders participated in a twelve-day travel seminar to South Africa in May 2010.  The seminar, which was organized by the Center for the Church and the Black Experience (CBE) and led by CBE Director, Dr. Drew Smith, focused on “Theological Formation of Public Leaders in South Africa.”  The group engaged in systematic dialogue with theological scholars at a number of South African colleges and universities, including the University of South Africa, the University of Pretoria, the University of Stellenbosch, and the Theological Education by Extension College.

The group was also hosted for dialogue by religious and community leaders representing the South African Council of Churches, the Harold Wolpe Memorial Trust, the Methodist Church of Atteridgeville, and the Uniting Reformed Church of Alexandra.  The latter was the congregation with whom the delegation worshiped on Sunday and was also a context where the delegation rendered community service by contributing almost one hundred books and DVDs to the church’s children's library and a monetary donation for the purchasing of media equipment.

The delegation also received a rich exposure to South African history and culture through visits to museums, sites of struggle, home visits, a variety of restaurants, craft markets, shopping malls, and (for a few members of the group) an excursion to one of South Africa’s game reserves.
