Garrett-Evangelical to Offer Courses Spring 2012 in Three UM Churches

EVANSTON, Ill., December 2011 – Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary will offer two dynamic courses held in three convenient locations in the Spring of 2012.  The Oikos of God will be taught at First United Methodist Church in Evanston, Illinois, beginning January 31st, and The United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin beginning February 3rd.  Starting January 30th, Dante: The Divine Comedy will be held at the First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple in the Chicago Loop.

The seminary’s strategic plan, recently approved by Garrett-Evangelical’s Board of Trustees, calls for further development of continuing education in 2012 and 2013.  "Garrett-Evangelical is committed to partnering with local congregations throughout the region to further educational opportunities for clergy and laity.  This is part of our mission," said Dr. Jim Noseworthy, vice president for administration and director of external programs. “These two courses reaffirm the institution’s commitment to lifelong learning and the local church.”

brings together people from all walks of life to consider the ecological and economic crises facing our world and to construct charitable, just, and sustainable solutions.  One of our most popular courses, The Oikos of God returns this year under the leadership of Rev. Timothy Eberhart.  An ordained elder in the Dakotas Conference, Rev. Eberhart is currently completing his Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University in Theological Studies and Ethics.  He received his B.A. from St. Olaf College and his M.Div. from Vanderbilt Divinity School.

Dante_-_HomepageDante: The Divine Comedy
is open to anyone who would like to read this fourteenth-century classic in community and discuss the theological questions it raises.  Participants will explore Dante’s conception of the rings of Hell and the journey’s end in Paradise.  Rev. Dr. John Dally anticipates an enriching and entertaining experience: “If you only got as far as the first circles of Hell in your college humanities survey, it’s time to continue the journey.”  Dr. Dally is an ordained Episcopal priest.  He received his Ph.D. in Religion and Literature from the University of Chicago and is currently visiting associate professor of preaching and missional leadership at Garrett-Evangelical.

Both courses are available for academic credit or enrichment.  For more information on either course contact the Office of External Programs at 847.866.4547 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
