A Healthcare Education Conference for Religious and Community Leaders

Join us on October 1-2, 2013 for Plenary and Small Group Sessions providing faith and community leaders with the information they need to help people of the community navigate and access health security provided by the Affordable Care Act.

The Conference will gather at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and satellite sites in Chicago (North Side, South Side, West Side), Aurora and Geneva, Illinois. It will also be streamed to AAPC (American Association of Pastoral Counseling) sites across the country. On Tuesday night, the Conference begins at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary with a plenary session featuring the Rev. Gary Gunderson, Professor of Faith and Health of the Public, Wake Forest University School of Divinity. The introductory plenary will be web streamed to all satellite sights. On Wednesday, all campuses will host a morning plenary and then gather in small groups focused on empowering congregational leaders to help constituents access health care benefits.

The Conference is sponsored by Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and the Center for Religion and Psychotherapy of Chicago in partnership with The Campaign for Better Health Care, The Center for Faith and Community Health Transformation: Advocate Health System, Samaritan Counseling Center in Naperville and the Center for Religion and Psychotherapy of Chicago.

Our plenary speaker, The Rev. Gary Gunderson is Professor of Faith and Health of the Public at the School of Divinity, Wake Forest University. Gunderson is the Vice President for Faith and Health of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where he focuses on how faith is an asset for healthcare and the health of the community. He is internationally recognized for fundamental creative conceptual work in the field and the large scale networks of congregations with proven impact on health outcomes in Memphis, TN, where he remains a scholar in the Center of Excellence in Faith and Health. Gunderson serves on advisory panels for the World Council of Churches and a network of global faith-based hospitals, another network of US health systems focusing on the health of the poor and retains a faculty role with the University of Cape Town. Research interests include conceptual work on the "leading causes of life" and "religious health assets." His most recent book, co-written with Dr. James Cochrane of South Africa, is Religion and the Health of the Public: Changing the Paradigm (Palgrave-McMcillian, 2011) was released just as he began his move to Wake Forest. He will be working with divinity and medical students in teaching and applied research in the medical center and community contexts. Gunderson, an ordained Baptist minister, is the author of five books in the field of faith and health.

Tuesday, October 1 - 7:00PM

Navigating the Affordable Care Act: People of Faith Seeking Justice and Health is a HEALTH CARE EDUCATION CONFERENCE being convened by Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.

The conference begins with a Plenary at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary web streamed to satellite sites featuring The Rev. Gary Gunderson, Professor of Faith and Health of the Public, Wake Forest University, School of Divinity. Rev. Gunderson is internationally recognized for fundamental creative conceptual work in the field and within the large scale networks of congregations. His campus-wide Plenary will invite faith leaders to consider the implications and opportunities for faith communities and the role of faith communities in the changing healthcare environment.

Wednesday, October 2 - 8:30AM - 5:30PM

On Wednesday, all sites of the Conference focus on understanding and navigating the Affordable Care Act. The day begins with a Plenary introducing the law.

Following the Plenary, participants will be invited to go deeper. During the morning and afternoon, small group sessions will investigate a variety of topics of interest to faith communities. Small group sessions include;

  1. How Does the Marketplace Work / How I find a Medical Home?
  2. Who is eligible for health benefits under the Affordable Care Act?
  3. How do I help my congregation access benefits provided for under the Affordable Care Act?
  4. How do I organize and network with my congregation and community?
  5. The Conference concludes with a Plenary inviting the participants to network and partner with enrollment sites.
