Meet Cherida Gary

PH10_Students_Cherida_Gary_2_3-10Hometown:  Opelousas, Louisiana

Age: 35

Home Church & Denomination: Oak Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church, Detroit, Michigan

Degrees: Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Southern University in Baton Rouge, La (1997); Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Wayne State University in Detroit (2004)

Garrett-Evangelical Degree Program/Year: MDiv, 3rd year

Career Plans: Teaching and learning is a passion for me. I love academia and creating learning environments that meet the needs of a diverse student population. Of course, that is teacher language, but in a larger scope, I see the church universal as my classroom and a greater task of equipping others for ministry in and outside of the church walls (regardless of whether they call it ministry or not). Maybe this path will lead me to be a pastor for some, a teacher for others, a mentor, or a good friend. Whichever it may be, I am willing to serve in that capacity.

Personal Information: I enjoy cooking for others and watching people enjoy my food. In the African American community, where there is food, there is family! Food can bring many people together. Food is intimate, nurturing, healing, and capable of breaking through barriers that words sometimes cannot. Also, I really enjoy reading. I feel like I should be spending every waking moment enriching my life through new experiences and gaining new knowledge so I can share it with others.

Attraction to Garrett-Evangelical: On my initial visit to Garrett, I was taken in by the warmth of the community, its presence in the midst of the great Northwestern University, and the beauty of the campus nestled next to Lake Michigan. The hospitality of the admissions office and the way people here expressed genuine interest in what I wanted to experience in my education was critical to my decision. The rest was the prophetic move of God to make clear the path that I am following here.

Calling: When I hear calling, I think vocation! When I think vocation, I think "Oh No! Thirty years doing the same job!!!" Then I pray: "God, lead me, guide me - along your way. For if you lead me I will not stray..." After I say those words, I try to submit myself to God's will and willingly serve in the role(s) God has assigned me to in a given season.
