Ethical Leadership, the Church and the Global Economy

Dear Friends & Colleagues:

mark-fowlerWe are all aware that the changing global economy is having a dramatic impact on our communities, our congregations and the mission of the church itself. Recently, Bishop John Hopkins has drawn attention to this critical issue and cited Richard Longworth's book Caught in the Middle: America's Heartland in the Age of Globalism as a key text to understanding the complex scope of the problem.

In response Garrett-Evangelical is offering a conference on Ethical Leadership, the Church and the Global Economy to be held at the seminary from February 25th -27th. We have assembled academic and clerical leaders to speak, preach and help us think together about strategic actions we can take to affect the outcome.

Richard Longworth, senior fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs will be the keynote speaker. Other presenters, panelists and preachers include Max Stackhouse, professor emeritus at Princeton Theological Seminary, Dipak Jain of Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, Drew Smith, Director of Garrett-Evangelical's Center for Church and the Black Experience, Walter Fluker, Executive Director of the Leadership Center at Morehouse College, Brent Waters, Garrett-Evangelical's Stead Center for Ethics and Values and Bishops Gregory Palmer of Illinois Great Rivers, Sally Dyck of Minnesota and John Hopkins of East Ohio.

Your participation in the dialogue is vital. With your help, we intend to:

  • refine and focus the impact of the global economy and formulate strategic directions for the church in response.
  • establish relationships across the church and the academy to think strategically and ethically in order to address the changing realities in our communities and institutions.
  • shape the work we will do as leaders and members of the church and the academy to impact the effects of the global economy in this time of change.

We urge you to be a part of the event and look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Rev. Dr Mark Fowler
