Programs of Study

Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary is committed to education for the whole church. Some prospective students enter seminary seeking graduate-level degree programs to help them meet their vocational objectives and to help the church fulfill its mission.Others are looking for graduate level coursework in order to help them fulfill their call to ministry.

Degree programs fall into two broad categories:

  1. those that primarily prepare students for ministry, in congregations or in community leadership and service:
    Master of Arts
    Master of Divinity
    Doctor of Ministry
  2. those that primarily prepare students for teaching, research, and leadership in the church, colleges, and universities:
    Master of Theological Studies
    Doctor of Philosophy

Non-degree programs fall into two broad categories:

  1. For United Methodist students who are not pursuing a degree we offer the following programs: (Both BGTS and Certification Studies prescribe coursework that may apply to a degree program, that may stand alone, and/or that may contribute to your vocational goals.)
    Basic Graduate Theological Studies
    Certification Studies programs approved by The United Methodist Church
    United Methodist Students at Christian Theological Seminary
    Course of Study - For United Methodist Local Pastors
    Advanced Course of Study - For United Methodist Local Pastors seeking ordination as an elder
  2. Enrichment Studies - for continuing education or exploring a degree program. A maximum of 5 courses may be taken as an enrichment student (Some courses are not available to Enrichment students.)
