“Orient”-alism and the Christian Search for Paradise in the East Thursday, March 17, 1:15 p.m. Chapel of the Unnamed Faithful
This lecture will explore a shift in thinking surrounding understandings of paradise. Early Christian communities viewed baptism as an entrance into paradise on earth and the church as the paradise in this world. This was later transformed from the 9th to 12th centuries into the Western European mythic search for paradise lost in the exotic east.
