Garrett-Evangelical and Northwestern University Welcome Michelle Alexander

alexanderwebIn celebration of the 2012 Black History Month, the Center for the Church and the Black Experience (CBE) at Garrett-Evangelical in cooperation with the Department of African American Studies at Northwestern University is proud to welcome legal scholar and civil rights advocate Michelle Alexander.

A book signing and reception will follow Professor Alexander's lecture.

Professor Alexander is a highly acclaimed civil rights lawyer, advocate, and legal scholar. She was the director of the Civil Rights Clinic while teaching at Stanford Law School.  She currently serves a joint appointment at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity and the Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University. Her legal career has included engaging in civil rights litigation in both the private and nonprofit sector. Additionally, she served as the director of the Racial Justice Project for the ACLU of Northern California, where she helped lead a national campaign against racial profiling. She is the winner of a Soros Justice Fellowship that supported the writing of The New Jim Crow.  Alexander is a graduate of Stanford Law School and Vanderbilt University and has clerked for Justice Harry A. Blackmun on the U.S. Supreme Court and for Chief Judge Abner Mikva on the D.C. Circuit of the U.S. Court of
Appeals.

Jim_Crow_book_coverProfessor Alexander has achieved national acclaim for her book,  The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, published in the fall of 2010. The New Jim Crow became an overnight phenomenon, sparking a muchneeded conversation about ways in which our system of mass incarceration has come to resemble systems of racial control from a different era.
