Field Education

Without exception, Garrett-Evangelical graduates point to their field education experience as key to their seminary education. Our field education program reflects the seminary’s philosophy that students mature into ministry by knowing, being and doing.

By combining hands-on experience with our academic course series, Vocational Formation & Church Leadership (VFCL), we offer students the finest opportunity to discern, test and refine their call to ministry.

For Students

Field Education is an academic requirement beginning in the fall of your 2nd year and is concurrent with the second year of VFCL.  Master of Divinity students take two years of field education, serving at the field site 15 hours per week. You may remain at the same site for both years or chose a different field experience for the second year. The requirement for Master of Arts students varies by degree program.

Our program offers:

  • Field Site Discernment – We guide each student to a field site where your call, gifts and vocational goals will be supported, challenged, refined and affirmed.
  • A Variety of Sites – Options include churches in urban, suburban and rural settings in the immediate area and surrounding states; chaplaincies in both health related and collegiate settings; a variety of social service and outreach agencies.
  • Mentoring – Students meet weekly with the field site supervisor for theological reflection and support. (The VFCL course is structured to provide additional mentoring from ministry professionals and peers.)
  • Compensation – Students receive a stipend for their work in field education.

Field Site Inquiry

Thank you for your interest in mentoring a Garrett-Evangelical student. It is due to the deep commitment of our teaching sites and Field Site Supervisors that we are able to offer an outstanding Field Education program.

Field Education is an academic requirement beginning in the fall of the students’ 2nd year. Master of Divinity students take two years of field education. They may remain at the same site for both years or chose a different field experience for the second year. The requirement for Master of Arts students varies by degree program.

Today's ministries have many needs and limited resources so it is tempting to expect our students to supply vital programmatic resources. However, this is not the purpose of Field Education, and while we have great confidence in our students' abilities and commitment, their role is that of student rather than employee. For most of our students, youth ministry is not a primary vocational interest.

The field site placement process begins with our interviews with each individual student to identify field sites where they will be supported, challenged, refined and affirmed.  Field Site Supervisors must be able offer time and care in providing structure, encouragement and evaluation during the entire period of the student's service.

Site Supervisors agree to provide the following:

  • During their 15 hour per week commitment at the site, students must be given the opportunity and resources to experience a variety of meaningful activities and learning experiences.
  • In addition to programmatic meetings, the site supervisor must set aside one hour per week to meet with the student for theological reflection.
  • The site provides a stipend of $3500 to the student for the academic year, and reimbursement for travel expenses incurred in service to the site (excluding commuting to/from the site).

Note: Most of our students serve 15 hours a week during the academic year, but there are full-time summer programs, internships and other creative options that we are willing to consider.

We begin our placement process at the start of the spring semester with the goal of securing field sites for our students by the end of May. If you have further questions, contact:
