Certification Studies

Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary works in partnership with The United Methodist Church by providing courses that meet the education requirements for professional certification* in children's ministry, Christian education, evangelism and church planting, music ministry, spiritual formation, and youth ministry. Students will develop core competencies in their specialized are of study to be used in professional ministry practice. Members of the African Methodist Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal Zion, and Christian Methodist Episcopal churches are welcome to complete certification with approval of their denominational officials. A student in the Master of Divinity or in a Master of Arts program may concurrently complete certification requirements.

Children's Ministry

Core Competencies for Certification in Children's Ministry

  • Ability to develop and administer a program for children that develops faith formation and equips them as disciples of Jesus Christ
  • Knowledge of faith development for all ages with specific knowledge of faith and moral development of children and the ability to teach theological concepts to children
  • Skills in working with volunteers and staff to create programmatic experiences and an environment that encourages children in the Christian faith
  • Understanding of United Methodist tradition and doctrine and commitment to ministry of the church with children

Christian Education

Core Competencies for Certification in Christian Education

  • Ability to develop and administer a Christian education program that develops faith formation and equips people to become disciples of Jesus Christ working for the transformation of the world
  • Knowledge of faith development for different age groups and ways to guide the teaching and learning for faith development and biblical understanding
  • Ability to relate to people, to work with volunteers and staff, and to function in the role of Christian educator with emotional maturity and sound judgment
  • Demonstrate leadership through an ability to integrate theory and practice with an undersatnding of and commitment to the church's educational ministry

Evangelism and Church Planting

Core Competencies for Certification in Evangelism and Church Planting

  • Ability to develop and administer a program that equips people to tell the Christian story to those outside the church and invite them to become disciples of Jesus Christ
  • Developing a ministry of hospitality in a congregation that leads to involvement of people in the life and ministry of the congregation
  • Ability to develop ways to care for people through pastoral care, visitation, support, and small group ministry
  • Providing opportunities for the growth and empowerment of laity in their faith and discipleship
  • Demonstrating leadership through an ability to integrate theory and practice with an understanding of and commitment to the church's mission of evangelism

Music Ministry

Core Competencies for Certification in Music Ministry

  • Ability to develop and administer a music program that leads a congregation in inspirational worship and theological understandings of ways to express their faith through music and song
  • Skills in choral conducting, service playing and accompaniment if an organist or pianist, choral arranging, selection of music and hymns for liturgical seasons and worship experiences
  • Knowledge of Bible and theology, the relationship to music, and ways Bible and theology can be taught through music
  • Understanding of the importance of hymnody and music in the United Methodist tradition and an ability to honor the tradition of the United Methodist movement through music
  • Demonstrated leadership in the music life of a congregation and a commitment to its music ministry

Spiritual Formation

Core Competencies for Certification in Spiritual Formation

  • Regular practice of spiritual disciplines within the candidate's life
  • Ability to teach others diverse spiritual disciplines (including, but not limited to, lectio divinia, various forms/types of prayer, confession and examination of consciousness, processes of discernment, leadership of worship, fasting and self-emptying, ways of hospitality)
  • Understanding of and engagement in the essential link between spiritual formation and congregational life (e.g. in worship leadership and preaching, Christian education, pastoral care, community outreach, mission and evangelism, church administration, ecumenical and interfaith dialogue)
  • Knowledge of and the ability to teach history and practices of Wesleyan spirituality
  • Ability to lead retreats with persons of varying ages
  • Ability to offer spiritual direction, both one-to-one and/or in-group modes

Youth Ministry

Core Competencies for Certification in Youth Ministry

  • Ability to develop and lead a program for youth that leads to faith development and Christian formation and Christian formation in discipleship
  • Understanding of biblical and theological concepts, as well as ways youth can be taught these and become disciples for the transformation of the world
  • A knowledge of adolescent development and behavior that includes personal, moral, social, and religious development and the implications of these for youth ministry
  • Skills in relating with young people and developing strategies for effective youth ministry that includes counseling, program development, teaching, adn empowering others
  • Understanding the importance of relationships with volunteers, parents and youth, and ways of communicating and enhancing collegial leadership
