Preaching offers us an opportunity to encounter the Living Lord present in the words of scripture, and proclaimed through the words of the prophet, to the people of God. God speaks to us and through us, and as preachers we have an awesome responsibility as well as a glorious opportunity, provided by our gracious Lord, to declare, "Thus saith the Lord." When students absorb this understanding about preaching, when they experience that "aha" moment as the Word takes hold of their inner being, that gives them insight and even just a little clearer understanding about who God is. Then they can share that knowledge in their sermons, and that makes it all worthwhile. The proclamation of God's word is the calling of the preacher, and helping others to come to that place is without doubt a gift of God's grace. It was that same grace that brought into being my published book of litanies, prayers and services, entitled Praise the Lord.
